Emporia, Kansas to the Elite 8
Emporia native Luke Barnwell is headed to the Elite 8 as an assistant coach with the University of Iowa men’s basketball program, continuing a rise that has taken him from Kansas roots to the biggest stage in college basketball.
Barnwell is in his first season at Iowa after two years at Texas Tech, where he helped guide the Red Raiders to an Elite 8 appearance and back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips. Before that, he built one of the top prep programs in the country at Sunrise Christian Academy, earning back-to-back Naismith National High School Coach of the Year honors while coaching multiple future NBA players.
A former player at Newman and Emporia State, Barnwell’s journey started in Emporia and has now come full circle on one of the sport’s biggest weekends.
Kansas ties. Big stage. Elite 8. #sportsinkansas
Waverly, Kansas to the Elite 8
Joey Biggs is a name Kansas high school sports fans may not know, but his path is as real as it gets. Biggs is from tiny Waverly, Kansas (population around 600) and graduated in 1993 before continuing his career at Ottawa University.
Now, he’s the Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff for Illinois basketball, working alongside head coach Brad Underwood, a McPherson native, as the Illini make another run on the national stage.
Biggs has played a major role behind the scenes, overseeing operations like travel, scheduling, and program logistics while helping build one of the most successful stretches in Illinois basketball history. That includes multiple 20+ win seasons, Big Ten titles, and an Elite 8 run.
This year’s team also features another strong Kansas tie in freshman standout Keaton Wagler, a Shawnee Mission Northwest alum and former Sports in Kansas Top 5 selection, continuing to make his mark at the highest level.
From Waverly to Champaign, and now the Elite 8, it’s another reminder that Kansas roots continue to run deep in college basketball. #sportsinkansas
American LOSES IT at the Philadelphia City Council
“I sit here in disgust as I watch Kendra Books, Jamie Gauthier, hold up pictures of a domestic terrorist, Renee Good
- I've never seen her put up a picture of Dacara Thompson, a 19-year-old who was raped and murdered by an illegal alien and thrown over a bridge
- I never seen her put up a picture of Laken Riley, who was raped and murdered
- I never seen her put up a picture of Larisha Thompson, a mother
I named two black women, by the way. And y'all sit here and pander to white liberal women like Renee Good.”
“We are here to give something different to Philadelphia, something that y'all are not used to because you've been voting Democrat for the mayor's office for the past 70 years. It's not MAGA who's doing all of the carjacking and the shootings. When we talk about ICE, 78 million people, 7 swing states, including Pennsylvania, we voted for this. We voted for this. We gave a mandate. — we wanted a fund to deport 20 million illegal aliens that was imported in here by the Biden and Harris administration with the help of the cartels
So once y'all stand up for Americans for once, because America comes first.”
🚨 Kid Rock just dropped a straight FIRE take on the NFL:
“If the NFL really were all about its stated goals and really wanted to take care of their fan base … there’s a band that checks every single box from San Francisco, by the name of Metallica.”
A note my Kansas friends will appreciate:
Two guys from Lyndon, Kansas will be on opposite sidelines of the Music City Bowl in Nashville today. Tanner Heckel (DB) for Illinois and Miles Kitselman (TE) for Tennessee.
I'd venture to say it's the first time two guys from that small town have played in the same FBS bowl game, pretty cool!
