Research friends: What cameras have you used to capture high-quality videos of invertebrates? Our lab is looking for new cameras to capture spider courtship behaviors.

@arachnonaut @BugsOrBust @DoctorZen I'm just going to drop this preprint here... doi.org/10.32942/X2531K While going all the way down the rabbit hole you get an IR sensitive GoPro...you can just as easily replace the lens with something not IR, but less "fisheye," and set the focal plane to suit your needs.

@BugsOrBust @DoctorZen Ooh, I haven't used a newer GoPro model but can those capture inverts (assuming spiders?) well? Or do you not need high resolution for your project? lol I've been wondering myself about video cameras but for field situations.

IT'S OUT!! Monumental work describing what goes on in the brain of a wasp that recognizes conspecifics by their face. @PlasticPercep has shown face cells in a wasp! AH, so excited. Surely to be seen in textbooks soon. Congrats Chris and @IDsignals - truly inspirational work.

@flydrocarbon Bonus disappointment when they say "we'll reach out to you in December". Well it's March. Holding out hope they meant December 2024.

I would be at least 50% less down/demotivated by the academic job search process if I didn't get ghosted by 100% of searches every year--regardless of how far I make it. yes, ik, PR rules, etc....that does not make the process easier.

@marshalhedin Ah, gotcha. Even then, his palps aren't that swollen yet, good eye! But makes me wonder - do they enlarge throughout the pen stadium? I know at least deinopid palps get super dark right before the mat molt, but never took notice earlier on..
