"Every Indian should know about this. What you have done with IRCTC is truly amazing."
Here is what months of research on IRCTC got me:
-- IRCTC is a wrapper/aggregator on top of Indian Railways Booking Systems.
-- The booking system is managed by Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS).
-- The project name is CONCERT (Country-wide Network for Computerized Enhanced reservation and Ticketing) is a mission critical Online Transaction Processing Application based on a distributed database model.
-- It has four data centres at New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. All requests are routed to one of these data centers and completed locally, depending on the region assigned to the train.
-- A backup data center in Hyderabad(Secunderabad) provides fault tolerance. About 2 years ago, a fire in Kolkata caused on of their Passenger Reservation System to be shut down. Secunderabad took over for nearly 4 days, resulting in seamless operations.
-- The algorithm for seat booking isn't mentioned in any white paper or tender that I could see. Seems like a secret!
----------------
This research began 12 months ago after a live class at InterviewReady. We were trying to design a scalable booking system, and IRCTC impressed us all.
That's when I decided to dig into it's internals.
Along the way, I came to know that the Indian Railways manages transactions worth ~ ₹2 lakh crore every year.
They have advanced realtime systems for ticketing, tracking and monitoring trains.
And their work on scalable booking systems effects us all. More than 1 billion people!

You can build a full-stack application using Python alone.
You don't need JavaScript, CSS, or HTML.
If you are a data scientist or someone dealing with data, here is an open-source Python library that will let you build end-to-end production applications without worrying about learning web development:
github.com/Avaiga/taipy
Star the repo!
Taipy is a Python library. It has a library of pre-built components to interact with data pipelines, including visualization and management tools. It supports tools for versioning and pipeline orchestration.
And it's open-source. And it comes with a Visual Studio Code extension that will get you started without writing any code.
Thanks to the team behind Taipy for collaborating with me on this post.
Adding this to your tool belt is one of the easiest ways to 10x your Data Science career in 2024.
