Having now watched the Derby replay a few times, I’m a little confused how the race melted down so much on the front end when the pace wasn’t really that hot by Derby standards.

This is what you get with a 20 horse field (19 this year). Take it down to 14. There are not 20 legit contenders to win anyway. Just seems dangerous to me.

That’s why I said if @ljlmvel had been able to guide FURTHER ADO out to the clear outside lane—similar to the trip Golden Tempo got—then FURTHER ADO had a real shot to finish much closer up front. That was exactly my concern. Instead, John Velazquez got crowded, hit with pressure from behind, and squeezed from the left side, just like everyone can see. So the big question is: how much longer are we going to keep seeing these collisions, reckless moves, and careless riding every year at Churchill Downs? Owners spend serious money buying horses and paying training costs. Trainers work day and night getting them ready. Horseplayers put their own money on the line trying to cash tickets.
