I’m at a trendy hair salon in Charlotte getting my hair done, and my 26-year-old stylist tells me she voted for the first time in the last election. For Trump. But she says she will probably never vote again. She doesn’t view the Trump administration as doing the things she voted for. She told me? “It’s like you like vote for someone to do these great things they promised during the campaign, but then the men in the black suits come in, and they decide what really happens.” Now, whether that’s true or not, I think this is a wide perception with the new voters Trump drew in the last election. If they don’t fix that problem soon, those voters will withdraw from politics again.

I have a lot of respect for Piper, but if I posted Deuteronomy 7:3 – "You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons" – with vague commentary in the middle of a national debate about what it means to be an American, every person currently defending him would rightly assume I was making a political point and they'd be livid. Piper posted Leviticus 19:34 in the middle of that same debate. His defenders say he's simply quoting Scripture, as if that settles it. It doesn't. A tweet is never just its words. The person tweeting brings context the words can't carry. Timing does too. What you conspicuously leave unsaid often says more than what you actually wrote. Everyone in this conversation knows Piper chose that verse and not a verse that could be coded rightwing and the choice is doing political work whether he names it or not. Pointing to the text alone is special pleading. You can't claim a post is just Scripture when you know perfectly well it isn't.

@seanonolennon It was sad and touching watching him clutch the toy. Totally agree about elder care here. Really all of us are hurtling through time so fast. The older we get, the more we realize it

Just saw a piece about an old lady living alone with an AI robot and it reminded me so much of Punch the monkey and his stuffed companion. I didn’t find either of those situations comforting or cute. I find them very sad. I understand a stuffed animal is better than no mother at all for Punch, and perhaps the AI companion is better than being alone for an old lady. But my fundamental feeling about it is that it’s pretty sad. However the old lady seemed to really love the AI so perhaps it’s not for me to say. And of course Punch has now been accepted by the other monkeys so that’s really great. I just didn’t understand why people found it cute that his only family member was a stuffed toy. Clearly he needed a mom not a toy. And I think we need to do better with how we care for elders in this country. We need to normalize hanging out with family from throughout our life spans. That’s how it should be I think.
