When people talk about homeschooling in this way, it’s always based on the weird and very obviously false premise that a homeschooled kid who learns nothing is a strange and depressing outlier. But that’s just the normal case for like, you know, millions of people who attend public school. There’s no mystery here, nothing to solve. We send way too many kids to secondary school. Lots of them don’t learn anything.
This is already the status quo.
A handful of homeschooled kids not learning anything isn’t interesting or new. It doesn’t cry out for new policies.

This whole debate is very stupid, because it’s based on false premises about universal education, which has largely been a failure beyond very basic literacy and numeracy. The problem is that there are already millions and millions of American high school students who are getting nothing out of high school, who will learn nothing the entire time they are there. They will become adults who know nothing about geography or geometry or algebra or literature or anything else.
Unless you’re willing to face that head on, it’s unlikely you’ll have anything interesting to say about homeschooling.

i understand why ppl do small talk when they are first meeting someone, but why do some ppl do compulsive small talk all the time? my MIL just by default talks nonstop.
“do you think all of that will fit in that suitcase? i always check my suitcase, don’t want to be lifting it on the plane. i take it to the gate and check it there. they let you check it for free!”
“uber is here! last time i took an uber it was a prius. hard to get ubers at my house, have to call ahead.”
“i talked to margaret. did i tell you that? she called me. she’s getting ready to go to the airport. 2pm fight for her. but she’s flying domestic. gets in in the evening.”
but like basically nonstop for hours. never anything that needs to be said, always just kinda autobiographical and impossible to respond to with anything other than “mmmm.”
it is very much the same as someone following me around with a television playing nonstop ads, but if i don’t kinda pay attention to the ads i am rude. not only can i now not have a normal conversation with my fiancé, i cannot even have interesting thoughts in my own mind.

Relative to Americans with a high school education, Americans with graduate degrees are twice as likely to support political violence. More education = higher support for political violence. It couldn't be otherwise.

I don't even care that people are appreciative or whatever. I'm not a preacher. I'm just saying that t's clear that this is driving up demand that didn't really exist previously in some locations.
Be bitter, if you want, but not so bitter that it confuses you.

Always important to remember that when you complain about the past and how easy they had it, you're saying that in a world where: - You can have anything you could ever need delivered to your house - You can use a climate-controlled personal vehicle (that might drive itself!) for transportation which is specially made to ensure you survive if it crashes - You have personalized entertainment available instantly to you at any time of day or night - You carry a computer in your pocket that is more powerful than most of what we've put into space and can instantly communicate with anybody anywhere on planet earth - You can work remotely from your house - You have machines that do your laundry and dishes Etc, etc. If you don't appreciate what you currently have, your complaints about the past being great are meaningless.
