Premier Smith says holding this specific vote is about ensuring the question of sovereignty isn't kicked down the road, even though the question- should it be successful- would do exactly that, delaying a referendum on sovereignty until who knows when.

The most important part of this question is that Alberta will not have a sovereignty vote in 2026.
The October 19th vote would just start the process of having an referendum on a sovereignty referendum.
