@TFTC21 How to treat alpha-gal

A peer-reviewed paper published last year in the journal Bioethics by two professors at Western Michigan University School of Medicine argues that it is "morally obligatory" to genetically engineer ticks to spread alpha-gal syndrome, a permanent condition that makes you violently allergic to red meat. The paper is called "Beneficial Bloodsucking." Their argument: if eating meat is morally wrong, then preventing the spread of a disease that forces people to stop eating meat is also morally wrong. Scientists should gene-edit lone star ticks to enhance their ability to carry alpha-gal syndrome and expand their range into urban environments to infect more people. They call this a "moral bioenhancer." They frame releasing genetically modified disease-carrying ticks as a "vaccination" that only "infringes" on your bodily autonomy rather than "violating" it. The distinction, apparently, is that a tick bit you instead of a government official holding you down. Alpha-gal syndrome is not mild. The CDC estimates up to 450,000 Americans are already affected. Cases have surged 100-fold in the last decade. Symptoms include anaphylaxis. There is no cure. Alpha-gal cases are exploding across the United States. The lone star tick's range is expanding far beyond its historical territory. And two academics at a medical school published a paper arguing this is a good thing that should be accelerated. At what point do we stop treating papers like this as fringe academic exercises and start asking whether anyone is already acting on them?

My dad (68) went to the doctor for a physical a few years ago. His doctor was APPALLED he didn’t have vaccines, boosters or flu shots. My dad isn’t the type to be lectured by a guy 20 years younger than him & IN WORSE HEALTH. He said, “Doc with all do respect, you see me 15 minutes a year. I AND I ALONE AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY HEALTH. I get up early & run, lift or bike 6 days a week. I take long walks every night with my wife. I CHOOSE the quality of food I put into my body & what else goes in it.” That ended the conversation :) I believe most doctors are great people wanting to help their patients. But if you want to reach upper 60s & beyond super healthy like my dad YOU HAVE TO TAKE FULL OWNERSHIP of your health & your choices. No one is coming to save you. You are simply a sum of your choices.

One of the biggest things that attracted me to my wife (besides her smile & booty) was that she NEVER talked bad about other women. She never felt the need to tear others down or talk behind anyone's back. She builds others up ALWAYS. Gossip is extremely unattractive. Self confidence & wanting to lift others up with you is extremely attractive. Ensure GOSSIP ALWAYS DIES WITH YOU!

Need some help! I’m in the best shape of my life… I’m as lean as I’ve ever been… but I have some inflammation around my knees that’s driving me crazy & no matter what I’ve tried: diet, vitamins/supplements or exercise, I can’t shake it! Any experts out there that have some ideas to help???

@tyromper I understand if your means are not a lot along with having to potentially take care of yourself for the next 15-20 yrs…but in your friends case, carry the poor guy atleast until he lands back on his feet…you could pay off his house -no mortgage would help! Weird to me.

I don't understand the boomers that hoard all their wealth from their kids. I have a good buddy that's struggling. Married with a few kids. He's smart. Graduated university with great grades, got hired by a good company, & did everything "right." He got laid off over a year ago & told me he's sent 10,000 resumes in with no job offerings..... He's working side gigs but his family is stressed. His folks are retired & in their 70's. His dad recently told him he's got north of 15 million invested!!! My buddy said he didn't say anything & didn't want to be disrespectful but it perplexed him. Why wait until you die to gift it to your kids?! It's worth more now helping out in my opinion that in 20 years when you die & you give 25 million to a 55 year old that's also then likely set & not stressed. You can gift like what 16k a year tax free too. It's their money, & when my folks sat my sister & I down for the inheritance talk we both said we don't want/expect anything you raised us well so do you!!!! But, I guarantee if I was in this guys shoes my folks would offer help. I don't understand the logic not to.

This chills me to the bone. She said "Am I going to be like that same girl who got attacked in the subway and di*d?" No indignation and no one cared. They all just stood around quietly as if nothing happened. The lady on the floor filming, quietly pled for someone to call for help all while the entire time her attacker was staring her down. Is this what we are becoming as a society? Quietly minding our own business? This whole event sickens me. This happened on a bus in Santa Monica in March. As of 6 days ago there have been no arrests.
