Davis Thompson’s win at the John Deere Classic is further confirmation that the Jones Cup is the best amateur event at predicting pro success and there isn’t a close second. Ludvig Åberg, Justin Thomas, Akshay Bhatia, Patrick Reed, Corey Conners, Davis Thompson, Kyle Stanley, Luke List and DJ Trahan are the PGA TOUR winners among its 20 champions. @JohnPetersonFW beat Spieth in a playoff there. Beau Hossler won the Jones Cup the same year he won the Haskins Award as the top player in college golf. Same with Braden Thornberry, who joined Peterson as players to win the Jones Cup and NCAA title in the same year. Thornberry finished 4th in a PGA TOUR event that same year. So much of it has to do with Ocean Forest, a penal place where you can’t fake it. And the winter date in Sea Island puts even further emphasis on strong ball control. I’ve seen wild things there, like players laying up short of a creek 200 yards off the 18th tee because the strong winds made them afraid they couldn’t carry it. Reed’s winning score was +6 for three rounds (he beat future Ryder Cup player Victor Dubuisson in a playoff). Thompson put on arguably the best performance in tournament history. He shot a tournament record 13 under to win by 9(!). His win came a year after he lost to Bhatia in a playoff.
