The Trump administration has announced it plans to dismantle the US Forest Service. All 10 regional offices are set to close in addition to over 50 research labs.

Timber harvesting is needed and does happen. It cannot happen at the rate in which it needs to because the infrastructure for that doesn’t exist any longer. Environmental factions and laws have decreased the amount of mills available to process timber in the US. Therefore making it very expensive to process when it has to be relocated hundreds of miles away.
