@ippus In any case, thanks again- I'd like to call it here re this convo on at least amicable/neutral terms (hopefully). I appreciate the perspective, and hope you have a good rest of the day.

I do not disagree. I do however think everyone has a different concept of what is 'solved' and that is why the expectations are so mismatched. For foreign vendors (generally); being able to accept currency & card, on WIFI/data that doesn't die, with nothing fucking up the systems is our primary concern. A lot of us book a spot, take a spot, and come in with the options that we have access to that could convenience our customer. Most of us have have no idea what the density of foreign vendors are in the convention, let alone what it looks like when most of them are doing the same thing to a local person's bank account. You are coming at me like the only conversation going around is about people listing one price in what -looks- like AUD currency only to rugpull the currency on card readers as USD. Which I will say for your benefit- in no uncertain terms- that is a scam. They shouldn't do it. I have no idea why they think it is acceptable and they should fuck right off. But it isn't. There are people who are upset that they were charged in -any- currency that isn't AUD at all, because there are additional transaction fees, as well as the possibility of their cards getting locked due to the wildly fluctuating purchases. Some are even calling CAD a scam when the conversion rate is basically 1:1. In such cases the question becomes "why is it that any other currency is entering the picture at all", especially when options like Square- a portable POS seen all over the country- exists. I am answering that question. I hope that was sufficiently enough context and intent for you.

Just a clarification on this but Square is region locked 😂 You need to have a bank account in the country + whatever Id info from that region. Most artists when conducting trade outside of their country uses Stripe or a local processor that allows international use. Because of this, in the latter case, some readers only charge in their origin currency.
FakeGamerGirl@FakeGamerGirl6

@277yen It’s the system they use. I overheard one of them explaining cause the system charges USD they do it- why don’t they use square?

@ippus I wouldn't (personally) call other currency charge (+ fee) a scam unless it was not disclosed - which, again, I think may be the root of most of issues. Some may just finding things to be mad at, but I think most of the cases lean towards former.

@ippus To best of my knowledge, most of the intl transaction fees are usually attached to a foreign currency? Correct if wrong. The thing to really look at is was it disclosed/told to them at the start? If so, then they made an informed choice- if not, then it makes sense why upset

@ippus Appreciate the response. At the very least, we can both agree that any additional transaction fees should (ideally; and generally speaking, legally) be clearly displayed- which I think would have solved a lot of issues. I don't quite understand re: density of foreign vendors?

@ippus Again, I don't think that this is you justifying anything. That said, a reply specifically to explain/ clarify one (out of a few different options) and why it may not work in the context of the recent discourse re: surprise additional fees can come off in a certain way?

@Jengaad I do not know why you are taking one clarification and treating it as if I am justifying something else. I even replied to other people about this on the very same thread before you showed up to insinuated this. Maybe not shotgun reply about my intentions...?

@ippus Apologies that it comes off that way. I'm not trying to insinuate that you are providing justification. I only come from a POV that it's understandable that there can be difficulties from seller side too, but even so, it doesn't mean much if a seller is not upfront/clear.

@ippus While I understand that there are difficulties for sellers too, explaining that "There are genuine reasons its hard to set up POS overseas" in resp to ppl saying "hey that's not cool for some vendors to charge me more w/o disclosure" and finding out via bank is not easy to accept

@ippus To be fair, the outrage isn't necessarily at the $- it's that it is dishonest/illegal (esp if not told/shown). While it may be hard to set up pos, the seller has a responsibility for this; it shouldn't fall on customers to accept this practice (prices stated diff from charges)

@ameliesbasement @277yen The problem lies in that a lot of them don't; Fr ACCC/RBA websites, max you can charge is 2% and has to be very clearly displayed (currency as well as the surchage). Not 100% sure if it has to be in Aud- It's dishonest/illegal to not disclose. (Pls correct me if wrong w sources)

@277yen It’s technically completely legal, the only thing they have to do is clearly state on signage that it is in USD otherwise there would be issues

@277yen Or CAD which at least is somewhat similar to AUD but you’d think if you’re traveling overseas for a con you’d match your prices to that countries currency

(写真付きでポイントも説明しており、作る際に超便利です!) yassu-cooking.com/entry/2025/06/…

@dilrhubarb Poor time management can be a morally bad trait (aka the person doesn't care for other's time); but shaming is a poor way to address it. You can only do your best and have to accept consequences (e.g. missed opportunities, people who might distance themselves)- that's it. (4/4)

@dilrhubarb And it comes to what you and that other person/group find ok- some people won't accept it. You don't have to change everything just for that; but similarly they do not have to be ok with lateness either. (3/?)

I'm so tired of lateness being viewed as a moral failing. I've been shamed for it my whole life because it's framed as "disrespect" (and no, it hasn't helped me be more punctual) and if I lost out on a major life opportunity because of it I don't think I could have ever recovered
