@rfmwilliams We really need a category above 'war' to indicate a series of conjoined sequential conflicts. The Roman 'Macedonian Wars' were distinct wars, but obviously connected. Anyway, three wars, but joined together under that sort of a super-category, 'The Iraq Wars' all together.

@BretDevereaux Bret, what different choices would better ensure a tenure track position? If not military history then what? The value of an UNC CH degree is also alarming.

Another job market near-miss. It stings more to get close at this stage because I know most dept. won't even consider me; too long from degree. And I don't blame the near-miss dept. - placement rates are c. 10%, they will have had a lot of strong choices. But still stings. 1/

@BretDevereaux My math says, assuming you have 3 years of relevant teaching experience (you probably have more) you'd be at $56879 working as a high school social studies teacher in WCPSS. 3 courses a day, probably all the same prep, about 90 students a day.

Compared to most adjuncts, my gig is gold-plated, but: * 43k * 2-2 load, 2 preps a semester. * Always outside of my subfield, I suppose - I teach modern/American military history too. * Without a TA, 70, but I've been lucky with TA assignments this year.

@JoashChung @POTUS So my advice, unfortunately, is call and wait, and then escalate when the reps don't know what they're talking about. Because apparently MOHELA doesn't realize how SAVE works.

@POTUS MOHELA is including spouse AGI in SAVE plan monthly payment calculations. Was on the phone over an hour and had to argue with MOHELA representatives to get them to realize they messed up. Please fix this. #pslf #mohela

@JoashChung @POTUS 3 90 minute conversations with MOHELA later a supervisor tells me that spouse income is included on SAVE even if MFS. After pointing them to their own correspondence that says the opposite they are reprocessing my application with lots of notes that say to exclude.

@BretDevereaux Take the prisoner’s dilemma: Machiavellian behavior is the initial rational action that results in immediate benefit. With repeated games, however, cooperation emerges as the superior choice. I see a similar relationship between realism and other theories of IR.

You know, looking back at a bit of Thucydides I think it's striking that as the origin point of realist political thinking, it is the Athenians in Thucydides who put forward realist paradigms, their opponents who warn them of the peril of that thinking...and Athens loses.
