Those numbers show why so many Democrats initially wanted to run for US Senate this year. Paxton has much bigger hurdles to overcome than Cruz ever had.

If Talarico is doing vastly better with independents than either Beto or Allred and has more $$, it’s easy to see why Cook, Sabato & others have been downgrading Paxton’s chances. Paxton is still barely over 80% with Republicans. He’s still trying to bring that number up

12% That’s the percentage of independents saying they would vote for @KenPaxtonTX over @jamestalarico in that @TxPolProject poll. That is insanely low. Cruz was at 33% with those voters in June 2024 and 25% in June 2018 against Beto O’Rourke who came 219K votes from winning

This is very different than 4 years ago where Abbott had very little presence at the 2022 convention that was also here in Houston. Back then former party chairman Allen West was running for governor against Abbott.
