Our study explored the relationship between actual height, height preference relative to a self-reference figure, and height dissatisfaction across men and women, finding clear gender differences. Consistent with prior research, men overwhelmingly wished to be taller and those with this discrepancy reported significantly greater dissatisfaction than men content with their height. Only 32.56% reported no discrepancy between the self-reference figure and their ideal height, while a small minority wanted to be shorter Those who expressed dissatisfaction overwhelmingly wished to be taller. These men reported significantly greater height dissatisfaction than those who were content with their height, despite no significant difference in actual height. This finding is consistent with the view that men’s height concerns are shaped more by internalized ideals and masculine norms than objective stature . In contrast, women displayed a bi-directional pattern: shorter women wanted to be taller, while taller women expressed a desire to be shorter, with both groups reporting elevated dissatisfaction. Crucially, our results showed no evidence that women who wished to be shorter were significantly taller than women reporting no height discrepancy. This finding suggests that height dissatisfaction among women can operate in both directions, depending on whether one feels “too short” or “too tall”, rather than absolute stature alone. Our findings challenge the common assumption that height concerns are predominantly male issues, or that women are only dissatisfied due to perceiving that they are too short. Tall women may experience social discomfort stemming from gender norms that idealize smaller, more delicate female bodies.
