🚨10-YEAR FRENCH STUDY JUST DROPPED A BOMBSHELL:
Pesticide-FREE Farming and Viable Yields, Solid Profits & No Yield Collapse!🇫🇷🌴🌱
INRAE’s landmark Rés0Pest trial (2013-2022) tested 9 real-world cropping systems across France no pesticides (not even seed treatments), but diversified rotations, cover crops, ploughing allowed and synthetic fertilizers OK.
DATA-BACKED PROOF:
Yields often matched or beat conventional benchmarks in key crops (e.g. bread wheat at Auzeville hit 500 g/m² in 2018 vs 400 g/m² conventional).
Sugar beet, potato & canola?
Extremely satisfactory despite being pesticide-heavy crops.
Pest & disease damage did NOT increase over the full decade.
Net farm income: 45% of systems delivered 2–3 SMIC/month per farmer; 35% exceeded 3 SMIC. 20% still hit 1–2 SMIC. Economically competitive.
Weed control (esp. perennials) remains the biggest hurdle but management improved over time.
This isn’t organic (yields beat organic) and isn’t conventional. It’s the proven Third Way. Meanwhile, EU Farm to Fork’s 50% pesticide reduction target by 2030 is still non-binding and stalled.
France’s Ecophyto plan keeps getting tweaked with little progress. Why aren’t we scaling this science globally?
Farmers: Could diversified low-input systems work on YOUR land?
Policymakers & ag leaders: Time to move beyond talk or keep poisoning soil, water & health?
