Tomorrow's agenda. Start my drive to Peoria at about 4:10 am, pick up a friend, arrive at Detweiller just after 7:00 am, clerk 6 races with the first being at 9:00, drive home after watching the best XC runners in the state compete in the final races of the 2025 XC IHSA season.

I'll add that Mike taught me the difference between a heat and a section in track. I worked at a meet at his alma mater York. I accidentally called for the next HEAT of the 1600. From the stands, he reminded me kindly, that it's a section. 🤣😢

A few of us IHSA officials and I have been remembering Mike. If he were at a meet we were working, a big race was coming. A great man who respected athletes, coaches, & officials. I'm going to truly miss his ladder at the finish. @ILXCTF #ihsa #ihsaofficials #shenanigans

😢 Mike was a fantastic supporter of HS XC & Track athletes, coaches, and even us officials wearing the patch. He was a true fan of the sports he covered and his presence will be missed by all.

From his passion for York High School cross country to his dedication in ensuring athletes across Illinois and the nation had their story recorded and remembered. Mike, your race may be finished, but your impact will never fade. Your legacy will live on in every athlete, every performance, and every story you helped preserve. Rest in peace, Mike Newman. 1962–2025.
