@jduran2605@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Staying educated and aware of the constant changes in the word is crucial! This will certainly help with the understanding of the various needs of our students.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I will stay educated and informed not only of the events of the world but of the events taking place in the lives of my Ss. Learning about their experiences and those of others will allow me to better understand the needs of my Ss. I will amplify their voices and opportunities.
@DMartinez5200@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I enjoy the way you worded your response! We are our students’ #1 fan! One of the many hats we wear as educators is that of a cheerleader!
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Educators can be advocates for our students by being their #1 fan. We can show our students that we care for them, that we want them to thrive, that we are proud of their accomplishments, and that we challenge them for a reason. #EDEL5200@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1
@TerilynThompson@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I love how you emphasized the importance of embracing the differences of others! I think this is what makes being an educator so important! We all have differences and when we work together this can be such a wonderful thing!
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 Working together to build a culture/community of acceptance requires effective communication, being educated, and being empathetic. We must understand everyone’s differences and embrace it. Make sure to have materials available in the classroom that support many cultures.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 To have empathy means to place yourself in the shoes of another individual! We are so complex and there is always more than meets the eye. Our students and their families have numerous issues they are facing at home and this is always something to keep in mind!
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I believe that creating a culture of acceptance and collaboration starts by modeling collaboration and acceptance! When we as educators can show our students what this truly looks like, they will follow suit. This also means making ALL students feel included 😊
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1 I will create a brave and safe space for my students by first showing vulnerability! If they can see that their teacher makes some of the same mistakes they do or struggles with the same things they do, they will hopefully feel more comfortable opening up!
@_mrslindeman@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 I loved how you emphasized the fact that number talks allow students to put a reasoning behind their answer. So many times we ask students how they got their answer and they can’t describe the process they went through to get that answer.
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 There are several alternatives to timed tests such as number talks, addition and multiplication fact activities, as well as math cards! These activities will boost number sense and reduce the anxiety caused by timed testing.
@Aly_Mendez91617@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler I completely agree! There is so much power in allowing students to learn from one another. Especially for them to see each other’s thinking and see that there is no one right way to get to an answer.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler Number talks is a great tool to show students that there are multiple strategies in solving math. This would allow student to have a deeper connection with the concepts in math. They will be able to connect meaning to their answers.
@WrightMath314@joboaler@MrsGallardo1 One benefit of number talks is building students’ number fluency. As students practice number talks they will become comfortable with manipulating numbers and understanding how they relate to one another. Another benefit is allowing students to learn from one another!
@Michael24401650@MrsGallardo1 I agree that we all love math! Even if we think we don’t love math there is a secret math lover in all of us! Maybe some of us have had a bad experience with it but there are parts of math that everyone makes connections with.
@WrightMath314@MrsGallardo1@joboaler One of the reasons for math anxiety is the focus on timed testing. Regardless of academic level students become anxious when they are timed and according to the article part of their brains becomes blocked and prevents them from accessing that prior knowledge.
