We must save hospice. statnews.com/2022/12/14/hos… Recent article by @AvaKofman has sparked heated discussion w/in hospice & palliative care. Much of it defensive. My MD colleagues seem the exception. General sense among HPC docs is: Enough! Time for clinicians to take back our field.

Such a pleasure meeting @anjalifp and King Cohen at the Horizons School yesterday! What a testament she gave to advocacy and research in disability populations across the lifespan!

A1: #ShortBowelSyndrome is often seen as a “pediatric” disease. This may mean limited availability for knowledgeable healthcare for adults which can feel scary & overwhelming. Using resources like @NORD and @OleyFoundation and joining online support groups on socials can help

A6: The clinicians I remember and have so much gratitude for make sure they come to my eye level and come to the head of the bed during rounds instead of gathering around the foot of the bed unintentionally talking down to me. #ShortBowelSyndrome

A7: For your own quality-of-life, it’s continue plans and goals, but hold them loosely. Consider explaining to partners, co-workers and friends that your schedule may change suddenly ahead of an event so that you aren’t worried about who will step in. #ShortBowelSyndrome

A7: If you are seen in multiple clinics, ask if a social worker or clinic scheduler can work with you to make appointments on the same day, especially if you are traveling from out-of-town. Consider having a “go bag” with you #ShortBowelSyndrome

A7: It can be mentally taxing to have frequent medical visits/hospitalizations.If you are a patient or caregiver with access to medical leave (FMLA) or leave of absence, take advantage of those if you are able to do so. #ShortBowelSyndrome
