When I was about 12 years old, I was home alone and decided to make scrambled eggs, which was about as much as I could cook. I turned on the stove, and placed a pan on it. 10 minutes or so later I returned and noticed I'd forgotten to put oil into the pan, so I poured some in. The oil immediately caught fire. Best thing I could think of was to hold it under the tap. By way of a miracle, the flames just died with only minor sprinkles of burning oil, none of which hit me. It wasn't until years later that I learned to never, ever extinguish an oil fire with water. Please tell your kids before they put the kitchen on fire. Oh and don't pour water on metal fires either. x.com/gunsnrosesgirl…

I'm the kind of immigration advocate who believes in cultivating SUSTAINABLE high levels of immigration -- not opportunistically allowing a short-term chaotic burst that ends up provoking a long-lasting restrictionist backlash. noahpinion.blog/p/americans-ar…

Reflecting on my journey with ethics and philosophy, I've often found an unexpected kinship with Buddhist thought, despite my strongly secular position. This connection deepened through dialogues with Venerable Shih Chao-Hwei. Her activist stance within Buddhism resonated with my utilitarian values. Our book 'The Buddhist and the Ethicist' emerged from these rich conversations, exploring how we might unite different philosophies to tackle ethical living. From the ethics of animal welfare to the challenges of engagement in a world that needs it, our discussions are an invitation to readers, whether Buddhist, secular, or something else, to explore their own ethics. The book is coming to Australia in January 2024. Read an extract here: petersinger.info/buddhistethici…

This book came out when I was 15, and it marked the start of my intellectual journey into atheism, skepticism, and critical thinking. I recently re-listened to "Islam and the Future of Tolerance” on Audible — it is highly relevant today. Sam Harris is exceptional on these topics.
Annaka Harris@annakaharris

Almost 20 years later, Sam’s first book is, sadly, as relevant as ever. Maybe even more relevant today, from where I’m standing. @MakingSenseHQ samharris.org/books/the-end-…

Christopher Hitchens: “Islamic fundamentalism is not created by American democracy. It’s a lie to say so. It’s a masochistic lie. And it excuses those who are the real criminals, and it blames us for the attacks made upon us.” This is why you have to study history.

But seriously folks, this a short and juicy tirade in which I say: (0) there will be superhuman AI in the future (1) they will be under our control (2) they will not dominate us nor kill us (3) they will mediate all of our interactions with the digital world (4) hence, they will need to be open platforms so that everyone can contribute to training and tuning them.
JJ@JosephJacks_

Can we just make @ylecun president of AI and call it a day please?

Death rate per day for IDF & civilians in Israel-Hamas war vs. death rate per day for US Ground Forces (US Army & US Marine Corps) & civilians in major historical US urban combat operations: IDF incursion into Gaza, Israel-Hamas War (Oct/Nov 2023): 2.36 IDF/day (measured from 10/27 incursion through ceasefire for hostage exchange, 10/7 deaths excluded), 315 civilians/day* (measured from 10/7 forward) (*as reported by Hamas-controlled Gaza MOH, and may include some combatants). Battle of Aachen, WW2 Europe (Oct 1944): 105 US/day, civilian unknown, although civilians evacuated beforehand, remaining evacuated to nearby city during combat. Battle of Manila, WW2 Pacific (Feb 1945): 36 US/day, 3,571 civilians/day (allied bombardment + Japanese killing of civilians). 2nd Battle of Seoul, Korean War (Sep 1950): 52 US/day, civilian unknown. Battle of Hue City, Tet Offensive, Vietnam War (Feb 1968): 6.96 US/day, 161 civilians/day. 2nd Battle of Fallujah, 2nd Iraq War (Nov/Dec 2004): 2.07 US/day, 17 civilians/day. The civilian death toll in Gaza is much worse than the 2nd Battle of Fallujah. Israel certainly not doing well on that metric by comparison, although there are important differences to consider wrt extent of evacuation (70%-90% of Fallujah population fled the city beforehand, only 30,000 to 90,000 civilians remaining, whereas Gaza still had 400,000 people in Northern half on November 4th), feasibility of evacuation (especially w/ Hamas instructing civilians to stay, threatening violence and carrying it out), and very high spatial concentration of civilians.
