Aside from banditry, I genuinely believe the Obidient movement is one of the most damaging movements Nigeria has experienced in recent times. Never did I imagine that in a democracy, people would be dehumanized simply for exercising their democratic right to support a different candidate. I’ve seen people encourage children to punish their own parents over political choices. I’ve seen supporters celebrate the deaths of political opponents, mock people going through financial hardship because of their views, and shame anyone who dares to think differently. To me, that is not democracy. A movement cannot claim to stand for good governance while silencing, insulting, and dehumanizing those who disagree with it. What made it even more disappointing was seeing respected Nigerians like Wole Soyinka and Pastor E.A. Adeboye subjected to insults and abuse simply because they expressed support for President Tinubu. Yet, when stories emerged suggesting certain religious figures had privately spoken with Peter Obi, many of the same voices had no issue with it. That double standard speaks volumes. Everyone has the right to support any candidate they believe in. That’s what democracy is. But no one has the right to bully, intimidate, or dehumanize others for making a different political choice. I’ll always support the right of every Nigerian to vote as they choose. But I will never support or identify with a movement that, in my view, has normalized intolerance and political hostility in the name of seeking change.
