The approval of a Ghana-led UN resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade the "gravest crime against humanity" in world history and demanding compensation for Africans has once again highlighted the seriousness of the enslavement of Africans. Here's a look at some of the Western countries that took part in the slave trade and their roles.

I cannot believe there a serious conversation about reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, and there are actual Africans who are against it. Their arguments being that Africans sold each other too (which is a distorted history and not the same as the one in question) and since we are not getting reparations from the Arabs yet, we might as well not get any. This will help us understand why some people would scream “Donald Trump come and take our resources” Look at the image below to understand what we are talking about: the worst crime against humanity. It’s so sad to witness these self sabotaging arguments.

Y'all should minimize typing too many words to say absolute rubbish. Support your oppressors boldly and with your full chests. All of you trying to be as literary as Chinua Achebe to hide the fact that you are pro-West are both amusing and misguided. Own your shit, we don't bite!

90% of all the Africans that were enslaved were raided, captured, and delivered to the Europeans BY AFRICANS. Before that, Africans had sold 10 million Africans to the Arabs during the Trans-Saharan Slave Trade. The Arabs castrated their slaves. Holding Europeans “accountable” for slavery is gravely misguided, and another attempt to fabricate an illusion of existential excuse for the consistent self-inflicted failure of Africans to self actualize. Europeans didn’t invent slavery. Humans invented slavery. Egyptians had slaves. Babylonians had slaves. Persians had slaves. Greeks had slaves. Romans had slaves. The English had slaves. Africans had slaves. Humans were the first exchanged good amongst humans. But slavery didn’t remain after the Europeans. Britain abolished slavery. Britain lost around 2,000 naval officers on the sea enforcing abolition laws on African rulers who kept enslaving. Britain paid around 20 million pounds to free all slaves. The only fully paid the loan this 2015. No one should pay reparations for slavery. It is not the sin of any one group. Africans shouldn’t use an event that occurred 400 years ago as an excuse for lack of self actualization.

Israel opposed the UN vote recognizing the slave trade as a gravest crime, yet some Africans still defend it blindly.

One very bitter irony in these reparations talks is that Britain essentially paid reparations till 2015. Only that they paid it to slaveowners, not the slaves. In a self-crippling paradox, they acknowledged that slavery constituted a significant economic booster for the slaveowners but turn around and denied (and continue to do so) that it caused lasting economic harm to the enslaved and their descendants. So, they paid slaveowners. Guess what they gave the now so-called 'freed' people... Guess! Another type of slavery. They called it apprenticeship, but it was really indentured servitude. The slaveowners were paid for the loss of their slaves. But the so-called 'freed' slaves were made to continue working for them for free. So today, when you claim that modern generations are not culpable for the slavery and therefore not responsible for the reparations, remember that they made taxpayers pay reparations to the oppressors till 2015. Remember that what the West is today was built off the back of slaves. Mò n bọ̀ ná

Imagine if you can: An assailant puts a gun to your head and asks you to sell your car to him. Of course you do - what choice do you have? Months later, he was apprehended but you could not make any kind of reparatory claims because he and the police agreed that you were paid for the car. "Weren't you paid for the car you sold?" Will you pretend that you didn't know that failure to sell slaves often resulted in invasion? Or the arming of other clans or villages with superior firepower so they could hunt and sell? Are you unaware that noncompliant kings were routinely deposed or assassinated, and replaced with loyal puppets who kept the 'goods' flowing? Victim blaming is a disease that can only be cured by a good dose of empathy, unlearning the slaver's rhetoric and scrutinizing their single, one-sided story

Knowing (your) history is so important. Those who know the transatlantic slave trade will spot in a millisec that OP tweet👇🏾is a lie. I am from Elmina of Elmina Castle Ghana. I'm a student of my own history with an African Studies degree. You're the one trying to pull a fast one.
Peter Hague@peterrhague

Ghana really is pulling a fast one aren’t they? First they got paid for all the slaves they sold (until Britain stopped them) and now they want to get paid compensation for the existence of slavery by the people who stopped them doing it. Anybody in Parliament who even hints at “reparations” is in my mind a straight up traitor. I, a taxpayer, don’t owe foreign scammers a penny.

The UK, which colonized Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, did not support a UN resolution condemning slavery. Portugal (Angola, Mozambique), France (Ivory Coast and others), Italy too. The same countries that once ruled Africa could not even formally condemn slavery. The other day I asked: If colonizers returned today, How many African countries could hold for even a week? Some of you brushed it off. But look at this. If they cannot even acknowledge the past clearly, What makes you think the future is guaranteed? Let’s stop being naive. Power respects power. That is why other regions build weapons, defense systems, and technological independence. Africa must do the same. Not out of fear, but out of reality.

@JesusVal56 @Thuso1Africa Definitely was worse - if we use number of deaths, mutilations and birth rate decline. What's sad is that because it happened to black Africans and perpetrated by white Europeans, it was buried by history and dismissed. But it absolutely fits the definition of genocide

When it comes to racism the whole Europe comes together. They all claim to value human rights but they all failed to acknowledge slave trade because they were the mastermind behind it. See why Africans love CHINA 🇨🇳 and RUSSIA 🇷🇺? They stand with Africa most of the times.

Slavery is bad? Not for everyone. Look at the results of the UN GA voting on the relevant Resolution. See which countries don't support it and ask yourself why? Colonial way of thinking is still in their minds. #400years #Slavery #freedom

The U.N. General Assembly has adopted a draft resolution that unequivocally condemns the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the transatlantic slave trade as the most inhumane and enduring injustice against humanity. 123 in favour 3 Against (USA, Israel, Argentina) 52 abstentions The resolution also seeks to recognize the profound and lasting impacts of the abhorrent regimes of slavery and colonialism and emphasizes that claims for reparations represent a concrete step towards remedying historical wrongs against Africans and people of African descent. #sabcnews

This summarizes the most self-destructive analysis on transatlantic slavery I have ever seen. It contains a straw man, gaslighting, victim blaming, and historical erasure dressed up as tough love. The straw man: you reduced a demand for accountability for industrialized, race‑based chattel slavery and colonialism to “blaming Europeans for inventing slavery.” No serious person argues that Europeans invented slavery or that they should be held responsible for slavery everywhere. The gaslighting: you frame centuries of violent extraction - the slave trade, colonial plunder, imposed borders, continent-wide structural adjustment - as a mere “excuse” for African failure, as if the continent’s development occurred in a vacuum untouched by the powers now refusing to vote yes on a UN resolution. The victim blaming: you point to African intermediaries as if that transfers full moral responsibility onto the enslaved and their descendants, while ignoring who held and supplied the guns, the ships, the banks, the plantations, and the political power that made the system global. And the historical erasure? You omitted that right after slavery, came colonialism, after colonialism, came debt traps and IMF austerity; a continuous chain of external extraction that your “self‑actualization” narrative conveniently pretends never happened. If self‑actualization is the goal, then the first step is acknowledging the actual historical barriers, not dismissing them as an excuse. "Britain paid around 20 million pounds to free all slaves. The (sic) only fully paid the loan this 2015." Who did they pay it to? Slave owners! They were compensated for losing their property. The slaves received nothing - only forced labour under another name. Britain made their commoners who probably didn't own slaves pay rich fucks who did and you called it 'freeing the slaves'? Britain soldiers died equalizing the transatlantic slave trade, making sure others were not selling and buying slaves and gaining advantage over them. They basically used abolition as a tool to entrench geopolitical dominance - it was not a display of penitence or morality.
