I came here on an H1B. I have friends and students and colleagues here on an H1B. I believe it has its worth and reason. But let me also say this: the AMA should first and foremost also focus on efforts to make medical education and medical schools in the United States more affordable and to strengthen home-grown talent. This is a country of 330 million people and there is huge enormous untapped potential, including among minority communities. I of course support getting the best and the brightest docs from all over the world. But we must also not forget that these United States can walk and chew at the same time. Replacing all vacancies with foreign grown talent alone can’t be the solution. I know that what I said is controversial, but there is nuance. I’m thankful to have been welcomed, but we do need both, foreign raised excellence and building domestic talent.
