@JonahDispatch I’m a big fan of yours (and the dispatch) , but what is trite about it? It seems mostly correct

I get why lefties are gushing over this, it’s well delivered and politically smart because it tells the left what it desperately wants to hear. It’s mostly a trite fan service answer. And i’m hardly a Vance booster. Meanwhile, I’d definitely read a piece on how Vance is the right’s version of Pete Buttigieg or vice versa.
Brian Krassenstein@krassenstein

Wow. If you are to watch one video this morning, watch this. Pete Buttigieg perfectly explains why Billionaires in Silicon Valley now support Trump and why J.D. Vance has flip flopped to liking Trump.

@CaHSRA Did they consider not quitting after they built that part, and instead continuing to make it longer in one or both directions?

@emollick I’m sure this is covered in your book (so apologies) but what about management writing is also a very important tool for thinking - I’m often not sure what I think we should do before I write a business memo on the topic. If I outsource the memo > I don’t really understand it

I have talked to a lot of executives buying Microsoft Copilot for their firms. Not one seems to have considered what it means to suddenly automate the vast majority of management writing without training or reconsidering the meaning of the work. From my book, Co-Intelligence:

Again, a moment to pause & appreciate the cool professionalism of those in & around the Key Bridge at 1:24 am Tuesday. Ship’s pilot radios in that ship has lost steerage & will hit bridge. Someone (maritime control?) transmits urgent alert to Maryland/Balt police dispatch… —>

@michael_nielsen What about cooling capacity. Doesn’t that become the primary constraint at some point?

Interesting to think about the scale of data centers. A H100 at peak is ~700W, and typical utilization in a heavily-used cluster might be ~500W. So a cluster of 100,000 H100's is ~10^2 MW By comparison: Hoover Dam is~2000 MW and the Three Gorges Dam is 10x again So there's headroom for 100x the power for large data centers. Much more, though, and you are building power stations at a new scale

Aside from the last part of episode 3 where there is the nighttime boat race, SHOGUN has done a great job of not looking like some cheap TV show.

@asymmetricinfo Maybe, but logistics of that are still hard- you only really care about eliminating weeds during a small part of the year when they can choke off crop growth. And weeds grow fast and can do a lot of damage if they aren’t handled.

The best salad dressing? Dijon vinaigrette. Olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, Dijon, oregano, parsley, garlic, salt and pepper.

A big earnings beat for Netflix. The company added 8.8M customers last quarter, its best result in more than three years. Your reward? Higher prices.

Kitchen Nightmares and Bar Rescue are two of my favorite shows because on both of them the problem, nearly 100% of the time, is that the owners are simply bad at some, or all, very basic aspects of their jobs.

I know this is anecdotal, but I've switched seats for families maybe 4 or 5 different times and I believe that every single time I ended up in a better seat, often because a flight attendant managed to find a nicer one for someone willing to move. 🤷‍♂️

@theissler @BrianGitt Isn’t your second point a mark against batteries rather than for them?

The statement is not entirely correct for several reasons. Firstly, as you mentioned, it doesn't consider the efficiency of the two systems. Combustion engines, as typically used in most jets, generally have efficiencies of 30% to 40%, meaning most of the energy in the fuel is converted to heat rather than propelling the aircraft. In contrast, electric motors often have efficiencies of over 90%. Very important! Secondly, the statement compares the mass of the fuel to the mass of the batteries, which isn't entirely fair. An important part of an aircraft's weight is the fuel, which is consumed and therefore gradually makes the aircraft lighter during flight. A battery, on the other hand, weighs the same no matter how discharged it is. Thirdly, advancements in battery technology could lead to future batteries weighing significantly less or storing more energy than current lithium-ion batteries. So, it's not correct to say electric planes "won't fly," based on the current technology. Finally, the statement doesn't account for the fact that electric aircraft might use entirely different design approaches, such as distributed propulsion systems, which could further improve efficiency.

Electric planes won't fly. To supply the same amount of energy as 20 tons of jet fuel would require 500 tons of lithium-ion batteries. That's 25X heavier!
