Atentamente, Fernando Arreaza.

‡ The Jenny Wiley Photo – Beyond Your Lying Eyes I'm sure that many, if not most readers have already viewed the confusing, embedded Keeneland photo of the finish of the Grade I Jenny Wiley Stakes. It's confusing because it appears to nearly everyone, with the apparent exception of the Keeneland Placing Judges, that the nose of the inside horse, Expensive Queen, is past the wire, and that therefore it was not a dead-heat, which was the official ruling. That Keeneland has yet to respond (as of 7:30 a.m. Sunday) to the widespread outrage on social media, is damning in and of itself, even if there is a compelling explanation. But I did a bit of research, and will present some related context, culminating in two particular gripes. *** This type of controversy isn't new. Here's a link to a 2016 Paulick Report article entitled Close Call: Distorted Online Photo Raised Questions About Del Mar Dead Heat paulickreport.com/news/ray-s-pad… Here's another, from Australia, in which the original reading of the photo was overturned, and the placings changed: dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/superrac… There has been a common thread in the explanations given by some of the racetracks in these cases, namely that the images that are produced for public consumption are not as accurate as those taken directly from the photo finish camera (see the above Paulick article for details). Meaning that the images that the public gets to see are more vulnerable to distortions in the form of pixelations, etc. Superficially, such explanations may be valid. But...*steam beginning to emerge from my ears*...it's 2026 – why on earth would it not be possible to present the more accurate image to the public? Someone in the booth could literally take a hi-res photo of the more accurate image with his/her phone, and upload it, all within 30 seconds! Absurd! My second gripe relates to the technology that is being employed. The cameras used are presumed to be high-speed, hi-tech cameras. But are they all equally good? NO. Have they improved significantly over the 𝗒̶𝖾̶𝖺̶𝗋̶𝗌̶ decades? Judge for yourself. I've attached four photo-finish images. They are, in order: Jenny Wiley "dead-heat" South Africa Racing Mooney Valley (Hong Kong) 1948 Carter Hcp. Triple Dead-Heat 1944 These images raise at least two obvious questions. First, why is the South Africa photo clearly superior in resolution to the Keeneland photo, and probably all American photo finish images? Are American tracks not aware of superior, available technology? Surely Keeneland, of all tracks, would have no trouble at all spending the money necessary to utilize the best available, and help to avoid the type of negative publicity that their relative crude photo is currently causing. Secondly, ...*more steam emerging from my ears*...how might it be possible that the cameras employed by Keeneland, and other racetracks, produce images that are only narrowly better than those which were produced 80 years ago?!! The first "modern" photo finish cameras were introduced just a few years before the Carter Hcp. was run, and 80 years later, EIGHTY YEARS, this is what we have? As I've mentioned more than a few times previously, the American racing industry metaphorically shot off all of its toes a long time ago. But is that really a good reason to continue to reload, and blindly fire off further rounds?
