@DrJEBall I do love those rare times when you finally steel yourself to take on a piece of work that you've been dreading, and it actually turns out to be quite straightforward. Maybe all the time your subconscious has been working on it, and smoothing out the rough edges?

I've just had one of those moments when a pressing deadline means you finally HAVE to address a piece of work that you have been putting off for ages (but been constantly aware of it hanging over you), to find that actually, the edits were minimal & took less than an hour...

@aniketos0 That's fascinating! Thank you for sharing this. I have followed in Alexander's footsteps to many places, but I didn't realise that when I visited Sakkara, I was standing outside his original tomb. The statues are protected now, but sadly they have deteriorated since 1955.

Imagine you could see the sculptural decorations of the first tomb of Alexander the Great at Memphis. What a thrill! - Ah, but you can! They are extensively documented & discussed by Lauer & Picard in a 1955 book in my library, although the authors did not know what they are 🧵1/

@aniketos0 Do you know when this photo was taken? It does seem to have suffered more damage since I visited in 2014. At that time it was set on a higher plinth, positioned a bit more vertically & had a descriptive plaque.

The Lion of Hamadan (centre) is misunderstood. Comparison with the Lion of Chaeronea (left) & the Lion of Amphipolis (right) shows that it sat on its haunches exactly like them & the Lion of Piraeus @HeraklesCithare. So it is nowadays mounted in quite the wrong posture 1/🧵

@Peston This really is just a game to you media folks isn't it? @SamCoatesSky criticises the lack of support from the cabinet; everyone from the cabinet comes out in support of Starmer, so now you criticise them for showing support. Just childish nonsense.

We’ve now got the spectacle of almost every member of the cabinet - chancellor, foreign secretary, deputy pm, et al , and even the ousted deputy leader Angela Rayner - putting out statements or going on TV to tell us how lucky we are to have Keir Starmer as prime minister. Which is never a good look for a prime minister. It smacks of utter panic as the good ship Labour Government heads remorselessly for the eye of the storm. Starmer’s payroll colleagues may well be right that most British people don’t want a new pm. Per contra, MPs who don’t benefit from his patronage are telling me that they have barely ever encountered anger from voters like what they are witnessing and feeling in relation to Peter Mandelson’s too-close relationship with the billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The fury on the doorsteps and in their streets about Starmer’s unwise appointment of Mandelson to the plum job of US ambassador exceeds even what was directed at Boris Johnson during Partygate, they say. And look what happened to Johnson. This is why Labour’s leader in Scotland Anas Sarwar has just done something unique: he has called on Starmer to quit, because he fears his party will be massacred in the May elections to the Scottish parliament if Starmer remains PM. Sarwar felt he had no choice but to detach Scottish Labour from UK Labour, because Scottish voters don’t want to touch Starmer with a several-hundred-mile-long barge poll. @TrentTelenko Shocking defence of the indefensible. Your comments on the Ukraine have been really informative, but your victim-blaming here is sad to see. Mr Pretti did not draw his gun, and he was shot in the back after he had been disarmed.

This is a tragedy whose proximate cause was Alex Pretti showing up armed with a cheap Chinese knock off of a flawed SIG pistol, while physically confronting Federal law enforcement. Pretti, without the pistol, would be alive and out on bail.

Worth reading the written reasons for this one as it goes beyond the headline. No suspension from playing, a £4,200 fine and no bets placed in the past 5 years. But it’s another pertinent reminder to players that betting on football is an absolute no ❌
