The architectural butchery of London:
The Imperial Institute in South Kensington, London (1893) designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt in an ornate, Neo-Renaissance style was largely demolished in the 1950s/60s to facilitate the expansion of Imperial College London, following a government announcement in 1953.
It wasn't damaged and a great deal more artistic effort went into what it was before being replaced with chunks of steel and glass. We'd like to think that the decisions aiding London's ruin are recent, but the truth is that it's been going on for a very long time.
