On Wednesday, 29 January, 20:30 - 22:00 CET myself @JimFunnel1 and @PlymouthGreens will discuss and answer questions about the Plymouth and Dartmoor Special Economic Zone - Opportunity or Risk? The United States geological survey identifies “Dartmoor in the east to Isles of Scilly in the west” …as one of the top five lithium-enriched granite areas worldwide. Dartmoor is now a part of The Plymouth and South Devon Freeport. The Dartmoor National Park wasn’t even aware of the fact it was incorporated in the freeport/SEZ zone which is 75km in diameter. Is Dartmoor to become a lithium mine? @GeorgeMonbiot @SusanChubb1 @TartantuesdayI @TheGreenParty eventbrite.co.uk/e/plymouth-and…

@KenBroughton_ @Izuvthesqrll @lizmurison @wshed One major issue I have with CCS/CCUS is that it’s run by the same people who spent decades covering up the impact of fossil fuels. Trusting them to maintain a safe sequestration under the sea from Freeports which have their own transparency issues seems foolhardy on evidence.

@KenBroughton_ @Izuvthesqrll @lizmurison @wshed CO2 in rock formations is tricky. Groundwater flow & nearby wells can lead to permeability & probs with maintaining pressure. Hydrogen Sulphide co-captured fr/ industrial processes is highly toxic. A lot of trust to put in an industry desperate to prove it ‘works’

The spectre of Devolution is causing political panic across local communities. UK freeports were the 1st step towards alternative strategic authorities & many councils readily signed up. Are they the architects of their own redundancy? totnespulse.co.uk/re-arranging-t… @wshed @blowhound

2/Growth thru Plymouth Freeport’s Langage ‘hydrogen centrepiece’ is also questionable. The site will create hydrogen - currently a tiny market. Orig claims its H2 will power shipping were always fanciful, w/ ammonia likely to be the (also problematic) future shipping fuel 🧵

1/Proof of ‘growth’ is hard to pin down w/ freeports, not least when the numbers keep shrinking. Plymouth Freeport promised 60% freight growth through the port back in 2021/22: the figure vanished in its subsequent business case 🧵@wshed @blowhound @EuropeanPowell @GeorgeMonbiot

@EMidsFreeport @derbyshire_live That’s not the same as the bid document. The bid document for Plymouth freeport can be found on their Governance page. The consortia will have completed the bid document following the prospectus guidance and submitted it.

1/Common Freeport fears: they're not democratic. After a day of ‘online engagement’ @EMidsFreeport acquiesced there'll be no public consultation on its imposition. With no meaningful say in the freeport they’re stuck with, public will just ‘feed in’ to delivery. A 🧵@tonyroe

@EMidsFreeport @derbyshire_live Has the bidding document for the freeport been published? (The document that the consortia chose to submit to create East Midlands Freeport without consulting the public)

@JimFunnel1 @derbyshire_live We've not 'made stuff up'. Yes a consortia applied to become a freeport - responding to a policy decision by HMG to create them, who conducted a rigorous process to approve them and then took primary legislation through Parliament to create them. Nothing was rubber stamped.

Every time you use the River Mersey Ferry, the King profits, an investigation by Dispatches and @thetimes reveals. The Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the coastline from Barrow to the River Mersey, charges the publicly-owned ferry a yearly fee for mooring at a pier on Duchy land.
