REMEMBER: FREE ZONES ARE FRAGILE The enterprise zone network looks formidable, billions in investment, cross-party support, 25-year contracts, physical infrastructure, legal protections. But it’s built on foundations that can be challenged. Zones depend on: Public money (which can be withdrawn): Every zone subsidy is a political choice. Governments can choose differently. Public legitimacy (which can be challenged): Once people understand what zones are, support evaporates. The model survives through obscurity. Political protection (which can be voted out): Politicians enable zones. Different politicians can disable them. Legal frameworks (which can be contested): The legal structures enabling zones are challengeable in courts. Community acquiescence (which can be transformed into resistance): Zones assume communities won’t organize. Prove them wrong. The fragility is real. A single successful legal challenge can undermine an entire zone model. A single high-profile exposure can shift public opinion. A single election fought on zone accountability can change the political calculus. A single community successfully resisting can inspire dozens more. The Stakes This isn’t about tweaking policy. It’s about whether Britain will be a democracy or a corporate archipelago, whether public money serves public purposes or private profit, whether communities control their own development or are developed by distant corporations, whether workers have rights or are simply inputs to be optimized. The enterprise zone network is systematic, comprehensive, and intentional. But it’s not inevitable. Expose them. Challenge them. Organize against them. The alternative is a Britain where everything exists primarily to generate corporate profit, where democracy is theatre, where regions compete to offer the lowest wages and weakest protections, where public institutions serve private interests, and where resistance is structurally impossible because corporate power is embedded in physical infrastructure with 25-year contracts. That’s not levelling up. That’s not growth. That’s not even capitalism as normally understood. The window for resistance is closing. But it hasn’t closed yet. Start with one action. Then another. Connect with others doing the same. Build from there. Because the only thing more powerful than billions in corporate subsidy is organized communities that refuse to be bought. 71% of Americans now oppose data centers being built in their area. Nearly half of all Americans (48%) strongly oppose them. And just 7% strongly favor data centers being built in their area, according to new Gallup polling.

Nearly 50,000 people in the Lake Tahoe area have been told that their utility will stop providing power to them, because it's redirecting that power to data centers. NV Energy, the Nevada utility that has supplied most of Lake Tahoe’s electricity for decades, says that next year it will stop servicing homes in the area, and instead direct that electricity to the growing demand from Nevada data centers. Northern Nevada is one of the fastest-growing data-center corridors in the country. fortune.com/2026/05/12/lak…

One of the most shocking videos ever shared on the internet.. Moments documenting hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza being forced at gunpoint to leave their homes during the war, before their houses were destroyed before their eyes. Painful scenes the world should never forget, no matter how much time passes.

Pedro Sanchez, and Georgia Meloni polling better than their centrist counterparts. Why? They believe in their political base with passion, left and right. Starmer is weak, his speech was souless drivel, he was ‘performing feeling’, he’s a dead man walking.

I have written to Mark Rowley, the Met Police Commissioner, urging him to retract his baseless claims about our demonstrations for Palestine. Our marches are made of people of all faiths and none — and we will never stop campaigning until Palestine is free.

The argument being pressed into service by the British establishment – blaming pro-Palestine marches for a rise in antisemitism – is clearly ridiculous. Had no such marches taken place over the past 30 months, images of children torn to pieces by US-supplied Israeli bombs would still be on our feeds. There would still have been news of Israel levelling Gaza’s hospitals, and starving its population month after month. Palestinians taken hostage by Israel, as well as their whistleblowing Israeli captors, would still have revealed that the Israeli army trained dogs to rape them. Anyone who blames Jews for the Gaza genocide, or for the ethnic cleansing of southern Lebanon, isn’t doing so because of the London marches. At the protests, the distinction is always clear, and indicated by the visible participation of a significant Jewish bloc. More likely is that the tiny number of people blaming Jews for Israel’s atrocities do so because they accept at face value Israel’s claims that the horrifying acts it commits are done in the name of Jews. Why might they make this mistake? Because so many British politicians, media, police and Jewish leadership groups behave as if Israel’s claim is unquestionably true. It is the UK’s opinion shapers, not the protest marchers, who have fashioned the idea that the state of Israel and the Jewish community are indistinguishable. In doing so, they are not just protecting the West’s ultimate military client state in the oil-rich Middle East from meaningful scrutiny. They are crafting a discourse trap for any political insurgency, like that of the Greens, and before that Labour under Corbyn, that starts to grapple with the magnitude of the West’s collusion in Israel’s crimes, and the reasons for those crimes: the billionaires’ profit-driven war industries, and their planet-wrecking financial dependence on fossil fuels. This is an extract from my latest article If Starmer gets his way, Reform - not the Greens - will be his legacy. Read the rest here: middleeasteye.net/opinion/if-sta…

When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit. Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero. We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing. Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run. That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.
