A 15-year-old Jaden Pierre was brutally beaten by a group of teens and then fatally shot to death in broad daylight at a Queens playground
The incident began as a dispute on the basketball court that escalated into a fight
Pierre was punched and kicked by multiple attackers before one pulled a gun and shot him once in the chest at close range.
NYPD officers responded to a 911 call and found the teen gravely wounded. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

I'm an anti-vinyl hipster. I can say that because I served my time being 14 and obsessed with collecting records and playing them on my mum's Dansette player, only to realise that I was fooling myself. Unless you're playing them on a very good, high-quality turntable and speakers, in the vast majority of cases there is no way vinyl *actually* sounds better than mp3. It's Emperor's New Clothes. A £££ turntable and speaker set? Okay, now we're talking. But let's be real here, most of your vinyl hipsters are using a terribly tinny HMV portable suitcase turntable and convincing themselves that it's somehow more ~authentic~ than Spotify. Just let it go. It's all about performance and aesthetics. You feel cool handling a record and posting about to Insta, but for actual musical quality, I'll stick with a good pair of headphones and my phone.

@aaron_lubeck Sometimes things really are “in the middle” spatially and culturally.

St Louis is a city of paradoxes:
The last old city in the East but also the Gateway to the West.
A deeply religious town but also a sin city built on booze and speculation.
The southernmost city in the Rust Belt but also the northernmost city in the South.
…with Chicago winters but Texan summers.

I think it's telling that with all of its global cultural influence, power and financial prowess, America could not convince anyone in the rest of the world to drink root beer

Anyone else miss root beer?

@dilanesper The $of pro sports comes off TV and licensing. The stadium itself is a cost center except for luxury box seats. Since it’s a low intensity use (empty most of the time) it makes sense to put them in the middle of nowhere.
No residents in the US want to deal with that every week
English

"NYC metro area" is misleading-- the Meadowlands is deliberately in the middle of nowhere because football stadiums are massive economic negatives and you want to put them in empty areas with parking lots.

@itsmailmanthree @larroumecj No for sheer numbers the industrial mill valleys in eastern mass and RI. Jack Kerouac was part of the large Lowel area community.
Woonsocket was heavily francophone into the 1970s.

@itsmailmanthree @larroumecj You must not live in New England. Massive Quebecois blood and people will tell you that.
Outside Louisiana and New England there is no distinct Franco American identity.
English

@larroumecj There's only about 10 million French-American people. It's "standard white" for some reason, yet everyone you meet in America is Mexican ("a minority"), maybe English or German, or Black. It's very rare to meet an identifiably French person (& y, counting multi-gen in America)

@gusty_lopez Don’t like a commercial break but no problem with players shirts as walking billboards for random brands.

@NavyStrang Obviously they need to re-tool. This is part of a multi year effort to get more mainstream companies into defense production.

This isn’t 1942. These lines are heavily specialized. An F-150 line can only build F-150s or a vehicle of similar size and wheelbase

@lsferguson Very hard for a teenager to get a part time job in food service. The owners want full time adult staff.

Lovecraft saw a few immigrants in a 95% white New York City in 1920 and became so depressed and disgusted that the only way he could deal with the experience was by writing a horror story about an ancient sea monster entity with an octopus head.

New Jersey is ready and excited to host eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer – including the World Cup Final.
Since I took office, my Administration has been working to prepare for the biggest sporting event our state has ever seen – and today, NJ TRANSIT released their Mobility Plan to move 40,000 fans to and from each match safely and efficiently.
In the FIFA World Cup agreement that my Administration inherited, FIFA put zero dollars towards transporting World Cup fans. It also eliminated parking at MetLife Stadium, putting the burden of transporting four times more matchday riders than typical for an event at the stadium on NJ TRANSIT.
This agreement will cost NJ TRANSIT at least $48 million, while FIFA is positioned to make $11 billion during the World Cup.
As I have said repeatedly, FIFA should cover the cost of transporting its fans. If it won’t, we will not be subsidizing World Cup ticket holders on the backs of New Jerseyans who rely on NJ TRANSIT every day.

@pnshdvermonster Unfortunately VT has taken a more tolerant attitude to overall vagrancy like that. Real shame as it has a lot going for it.
