Everyday I am reminded why I am so glad the tea went into the harbor One thing my American friends would be shocked to learn about the UK is that Brits who are self-employed have to pay next year’s taxes.... this year. Up front. Their IRS will estimate what is owed next tax year, then slap them with two huge payments in January and July - BEFORE they've even made half the income. Obviously this kills entrepreneurship. They take the $$$ first, then ask questions later. Already Brits get rinsed at 40-45%+ on the higher bands, plus National Insurance, student loans, council tax, VAT on everything… and still they still take a cut of money that hasn't even been earned yet. So if you run your own business or if you are a sole trader, a freelance media figure or consultant, then this "payments on account" system applies. And maybe taxation is worth it if you're getting something out of it. Instead, the UK has a government that actively undermines the interests of the British public with infinity immigration, declining public services, high energy costs, lawlessness and a plethora of knife crimes, two-tier policing and justice, and a depleted Navy that won't be able to do anything if Argentina decides to take the Falklands.
