Plenty of great so far this season for the @Dbacks, from players & management. Plenty of awful as well. All of it exists under the same spotlight. Good doesn't negate the bad, bad doesn't erase the good.
We need to normalize giving the proper kudos while also holding people accountable though. It's not black & white. It's a series of positives and negatives, and we just hope the good outweighs the bad. That's okay!
It's okay to celebrate Corbins's MVP level production, or Geno's early power surge. Or to admit mistakes! I'll be the first to eat crow while Pavin leads the team in AVG.
But!
It's also okay to be frustrated when our second highest paid hitter (tied with our All-Star 2B) bats .177, or when Geno's early power surge gives way to an almost guaranteed out in the order. It's okay to question whether Carroll waiting until mid-April to swipe a bag was mental or coaching.
Its okay to praise Hazen for not keeping Joc or Walker, as they flounder on other teams with contracts that would have sunk us, and for extending some of the team's best talent with great long-term deals. For trading for guys like Puk and Naylor, who have been amazing. For signing Beeks. For allowing the Shelby Miller redemption arc to take root.
It's also okay to continue to question the contracts given to Bumgarner, Rodriguez, and (especially!) Montgomery. It's okay to pull our hair out over Mantiply being the new McGough, or Hampson being a key part of the offense. It's okay to look at Lawlar's numbers and question why the hell he isn't playing in the majors.
Its okay to look at the team's record and think "hell yeah, 13-9 is a great start! Only 7 other MLB teams have more wins!" but it's also okay to look at the standings and realize 3 of those teams are ahead of us in our division, and be worried for how the season will end if things don't improve.
It's okay to call the training staff into question when we constantly lose players to the IL because of "Stiffness" or "Strain" or "Tightness" or "Inflammation."
It's okay to celebrate when the #Answerbacks respond to adversity with tenacity and mount an incredible comeback. That's such a great feeling! But it's also okay to criticize the things that led to them having to Answer Back in the first place.
Its okay to thank the Manager when he stands up for his guys and makes a big scene and fires everyone up. It's okay to acknowledge that his clubhouse presence is appreciated and he's seemingly well-liked by his team.
Its also okay to hold him accountable for questionable lineup decisions, his apparent pattern of making young players "pay their dues," and his absolutely atrocious bullpen management.
Yes, every game matters. Even though it's early in the year. The last two seasons proved that. Losses where the team gets beat are forgivable, no team goes undefeated. Losses where they beat themselves are far more questionable. At the same time, a win is a win as a win, no matter how they won or what they had to overcome. It doesn't erase the mistakes though.
#dbacks fans are passionate. Win or lose. 28 seasons is still young in the grand scheme of things. This fan base is still evolving, growing, and finding it's collective voice.
Let's not take a dump all over people enjoying things. Let's not silence and write off critics. Let's acknowledge that right now, the good outweighs the bad. Let's also acknowledge that there are bad things happening that should be happening at this point. There is still room for improvement, but enjoy the ride! Embrace the chaos. We're all in this together. And most of all remember...
The Snakes are very much alive. 🐍⚾
