Just to be clear, issuing new licences for the North Sea now would not increase the current supply of oil. Our current supply of domestic oil and gas is the result of the policies of successive Conservative governments, including those in which @KemiBadenoch served.

The attacks on the Masjid in San Diego are deeply horrific. Across the western world, Muslims are under attack. This is yet another example, coming in the wake of the firebombing of a prayer room in the UK. Far-right influencers and mainstream politicians alike have fuelled this climate of hate. They need to be challenged at every step.

Wind turbines are recycled, it’s not 2014 anymore. One of the internet’s favourite anti-renewable myths is “you can’t recycle wind turbines.” That argument is years out of date, yet the loons still try and use it as some sort of “got ya” to make themselves feel better. Modern wind turbines are largely recyclable already. Steel, copper, aluminium and concrete from turbines are routinely recovered and reused. Even the blades, which used to be the difficult part, are now being recycled into cement, construction materials, playground equipment and industrial products. Companies are also developing fully recyclable blades, with newer designs already entering the market. Meanwhile, fossil fuels are burned once and gone forever. Oil spills, air pollution and billions of tonnes of CO2 don’t exactly get “recycled.” No energy source is impact free, but pretending wind turbines just get dumped in landfill forever simply isn’t true anymore. Technology moves on. The myths just haven’t caught up.

Seems a shame to reduce this vital support for poorer nations, fighting the climate crisis - and of course to backtrack on our COP promises. We do have a bit of a cash crisis back home of course so understandable on that basis - but how about slashing or closing the £3 billion heat pump subsidy schemes - that’s money very clearly wasted, paid to families that have no shortage of money, who can top up the grant with around £10k to complete the installation of a niche technology - and who can afford the higher bills that typically come with that. Heat pumps do nothing for any of our targets, energy efficiency, carbon reduction, energy poverty reduction - it’s a middle class subsidy making net zero an easy target for right wing media and politicians. £3 billion we could use more effectively. Then there’s the £1 billion a year for 25 years to the big oil companies (who are awash in money, especially in each energy crisis we have) to pursue Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). A terrible waste of money every year for a quarter of a century. And if we really want to save the jackpot - cancel Sizewell C and the bonkers mini nuclear plan - maybe £50 billion there…..Batteries are fundamentally changing the grid in France now, causing nuclear to flex to the ever increasing - 24/7 - green energy, that batteries are enabling. The era when nuclear was the ‘base load we need' - is over.
