ANCIENT EGYPT'S OBSESSION WITH CATS
Back then in Egypt, cats were much more than ordinary pets. They acted as protectors, loyal companions and sacred symbols that were deeply embedded in daily life. Valued for keeping homes and grain stores free of pests, they were also strongly connected to the goddess Bastet, which gave them a special status among the most respected animals in Egyptian culture.
This high regard is clearly shown in temple art, tomb paintings and numerous sculptures, where cats are often pictured with families, nobles and hunters. When a beloved cat passed away, owners mourned them intensely and thousands were carefully mummified as a mark of love and respect.
Archaeologists have discovered large cat cemeteries throughout Egypt, which highlight just how important these animals were.Although some historical stories, like the account of Persian soldiers using cats in battle to stop Egyptian fighters remains debated by experts, one fact is clear: few civilizations in history showed such deep admiration and reverence for cats as the ancient Egyptians.
