Break the labor unions stranglehold on construction pricing in SF, fire 90% of the building and planning dept staff who are still obstructing new projects, exempt new housing permanently from property tax. Do those three things and it would help. But also accept that many neighborhoods will forever be out of reach of working class people who want to move there. You don’t have to like but that’s the truth

Trying to decide between 131 units on the west side with views or 30 single-family homes. The heavy infrastructure costs on the SFR scheme and improving condo market are pushing me toward the units, but I’m still seeking opinions. This would be wood over podium built into a hillside, not commodity SOMA-style Type I studios and one-bedrooms.

If you could go back in time about 40 year, San Francisco could probably have built its way out of today’s supply shortage. But that ship has sailed. There’s not enough developable land in the most desirable neighborhoods to make a dent. Because of rent control.

@moseskagan I understand it has to be done, but being an eviction lawyer is not my life’s calling. In most cases, I don’t have much sympathy for the people being evicted — it’s just a lousy way to spend your life. What I truly love is building.

Yet another person I know is dealing with massive issues with the contractor building their house. Huge mistakes made, construction stopped, contractor blaming others, attorneys getting involved, and years of litigation ahead. It's a nightmare, and sadly all too common.

Just heard about a studio in SF’s Richmond district that rented for $2,995. Which sounds like a lot until you hear that the tenant only pays 12% of their income on rent because they make $25,000 per month.

Just watched this poor lady (not a career developer) get brutally mogged and denied at a public meeting over 11 townhomes. Back in the day, a normal citizen could build shit on their land, unfortunately now you need an 8 figure balance sheet, a degree in urban planning, finance, law, and engineering just to monetize your property.
