Agroforestry as recommended by JKCCC exploits the complementarity between perennial species (trees or shrubs) and crops, so that the available resources be more effectively exploited. It allows the diversification of farm activity and makes better use of environmental resources

Bruno Ribeiro, an Agronomist with JDE Peets has challenged youths for coffee Uganda to feel free to always demonstrate the skills they have attained from JKCC training. This he said will increase coffee production and productivity as a way to fight poverty among farmers.

As a practice of rejuvenating older coffee trees by cutting all their main stems, to encourage vigorous new growth, Youths from Gomba, Butambala, Mityana, Wakiso, and Kalungu have attained the training and are now ready to work on your coffee farm.

Pruning and De suckering • allow light penetration encouraging flowering • allow air circulation by removal of infested branches to control pests and diseases • ease coffee management activities to perform e.g picking and scouting for pests • reduce competition for nutrients

For high quality coffee production standards, farmers must carry out good agricultural practices i.e careful harvesting and post-harvest handling. Pick red, ripe fruits and process them soon. Raised beds allow easy collection once dry, also cover with tarpaulins in case of rain.

Stumping allows the growth of new main stems with young productive branches that will produce more, bigger and heavier coffee beans. Stumping is done after the harvest and before flowering, then after every 7-10 harvest years. Trees left longer than this become less productive.
