7-year-old girl proves that it's not over until it's over

I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly." The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal. When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience." Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable. When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates. I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped. The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault." I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology." Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident. Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize." I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time." They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again." I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes. © 6IX.

#BREAKING Serious charges have been laid against a recently arrived Middle Eastern national accused of raping three women and pressuring two into marrying him because they had to follow Muslim beliefs, police allege in sexually graphic details in court documents. The 31 year old immigrant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the NSW Supreme Court via video link, when the Director of Public Prosecutions made a successful bid to overturn a NSW Local Court ruling to grant him bail. The court heard another two charges have been laid against the defendant after a fourth woman made a police report alleging he masturbated in front of her and her two children in their kitchen. He was charged with carrying out a sexual act on another person without consent and sexually touching another person. Police fact sheets allege the defendant has been married multiple times and met the 28 year old alleged victim through Muslim dating app Muzzmatch. In May 2023, the man allegedly began sexually assaulting a 21 year old woman multiple times. He then allegedly forced sex on her until her father arrived in a taxi and the accused allowed the girl to go. Allegations include the man being so violent it caused the woman to black out and her ears to ring despite her cries to stop. On other occasions, the man allegedly caused the woman to vomit during oral sex, bit her genitals, neck and breast, constantly grabbed her hair, caused a bruise to turn purple, restricted her breathing and slapped her face so hard her ears would ring. He allegedly assaulted the woman in her parents’ bedroom where he is accused of trapping her and recording her on his phone. He allegedly forced the woman to have sex in a change room of Kmart Parramatta and, while waiting in line at Oporto chicken burger shop at Westfield Parramatta, rubbed himself on her bottom through their clothing. The man has been charged with 25 allegations of sexual intercourse without consent against the woman. The third alleged victim, also 21, was also in a relationship with the accused, who allegedly made her choke and gag during an alleged sexual assault. The man was charged with another 32 counts of sexual intercourse without consent,domestic violence related threatening to distribute an intimate image without consent, failing to comply with digital evidence access order direction, carrying out a sexual act on another person without consent and sexually touching another person. Justice Hament Dhanji refused bail. The case will return to Parramatta Local Court in November. Diversity is our strength.

She needs to resign immediately to save herself. I once had a travel expense questioned by the Parliamentary Expenses Authority — an economy class airfare to Melbourne. This was when I was “randomly selected” for audit right in the middle of the 2022 election campaign. They didn’t just accept my explanation. I was forced to provide a signed Statutory Declaration and photographic evidence before they were satisfied. Fair enough — it’s taxpayers’ money. Therefore Anika Wells should be required to sign a Statutory Declaration confirming she met with South Australian State Minister Chris Picton — a claim Picton has refused to corroborate. If she’s telling the truth, why wouldn’t she sign one? Of course, if she’s lying, making a false statement in a Statutory Declaration is a criminal offence that carries up to four years in jail. So come on, Anika — what’s the problem, sign the Statutory Declaration. What are you waiting for?
