Timber was perhaps the most commonly recycled material, but it was also done with brick and stone. This remarkable 1933 building, Bailiffscourt, is almost entirely built of recycled materials. The aged effect is thus a curious mixture of authentic and artificial.

Interwar architects often reused beams from old structures in their timber framing. Usually these were taken from derelict buildings, but the Liberty store was made from the teak and oak beams of two decommissioned warships. ET Hall, 1924.
