A post for 'mental' people. In the current society of medical capitalism, of over-prescription and over-diagnosing, you are perhaps one of these people who struggles to make sense of it all. We might appear as being a bit open-minded about ‘mental illness’, but in reality, however, the psychiatric diagnosis is a scarlet letter on one’s back. Especially if you receive the label of severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoid-affective disorder. Those with such a diagnosis are portrayed in the media as total bonkers, as insane, as a shameful element of our society, based in over-reasoning and total denial of something magical, extraordinary and out-of-the-box. I have a big experience with psychiatric diagnoses because I dealt with what is called ‘psychosis’. It doesn’t matter that all my psychoses were extraordinary experiences (where I enjoyed being connected to the spirit world), but what matters is that I have a diagnosis in the first place. I felt small and invisible, ugly, full of shame and guilt. The psychosis, especially, is one phenomenon where open-mindedness doesn’t exist. While in the state of psychosis, we utter weird stuff. We post online total bullshit. We see the reality in a distorted way. The Kanye Wests and Britney Spears of our times deserve forgiveness, and some comprehension that the condition of psychosis might make one act strangely, and say really bad stuff. The emergence from this state is so shameful and difficult, that many simply never reappear. But they should reappear and we should be more compassionate about it. Psychosis is a mental health condition, that goes away eventually. And once it’s gone, those diagnosed with a severe mental illness, have the right to resume leading a normal life, retain good friends, restart working and being part of this society. Don’t cancel on us, people, please, don’t.
