But then your patient goes further and accuses Franklin Graham of sneaking behind his back. He claims the evangelist wrote a private letter to the President calling him an antisemite (or something close enough to sting), and that Graham wouldn’t even take his call to explain himself. “So sneaky, so dishonest,” your man thundered. He painted Graham as spiritually corrupt, more loyal to Netanyahu than to the Nazarene. Splendid theater. And yet — here is the part you clearly did not count on, Wormwood, and the part that has me rubbing my temples with a cloven hoof — the President himself called him out. Donald Trump, the very man your patient once rode to prominence with, has now publicly labeled Tucker a “low-IQ person,” a fool, someone who “has lost his way” and is “not MAGA.” He says he no longer takes his calls. He mocks him openly while defending Huckabee and the broader direction on Iran and Israel. Worse still, the Christians have now turned on him in force. The very people he claims to stand with — the evangelicals, the pastors, the “values voters” — have begun denouncing him loudly. They are furious that this man who so boldly claims to be one of them has dared question their sacred cows. His very claim to be a Christian has angered the wrath of their Enemy — who happens to be God Himself. How delightful it would be if we could bottle that particular rage and pour it over the whole flock! Nothing keeps humans more firmly in our grasp than when they convince themselves they are defending God while actually defending their own political tribe. Your patient is currently licking his wounds, framing himself as the honest truth-teller betrayed by the powerful and the pious alike. That part is promising. Humans love a martyr narrative; it keeps them from genuine self-examination. But you must be extremely careful. If Tucker begins to sound too much like a principled dissenter rather than a mere grifter or rage-merchant, some of his audience might actually start thinking seriously about peace, about putting their own country first in a way that doesn’t conveniently serve our larger goals of endless conflict and spiritual exhaustion. Do not let him become consistent. Feed him the sweet poison of self-righteousness mixed with just enough truth to keep him credible. Remind him constantly how “they” (Graham, Huckabee, the President, the whole evangelical machine) have betrayed “real Christianity.” Keep the wound raw. Make him believe he alone sees clearly while everyone else has sold out. And above all, Wormwood, do not let him notice the Enemy quietly working in the middle of all this mess — the quiet prayers, the people refusing to let politics become their god, the stubborn few who still put the Gospel above any flag or faction. I expect a full report on how you plan to exploit this rift. And try not to let your patient become so radioactive that even we can’t use him.
