@r_o_farrell @adam_tooze @OurWorldInData I’ve reworded the chart and the write-up in our War & Peace page to hopefully make things clearer. #the-absolute-number-of-war-deaths-has-declined-since-1945" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">ourworldindata.org/war-and-peace#…

@StefanFSchubert Here's another perspective on the shift you were pointing to: #0/countrytimeseries/sptinc_p0p50_992_j;sptinc_p99p100_992_j;sptinc_p90p100_z/US/2015/eu/k/p/yearly/s/false/8.404/60/curve/false/1913/2021" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">wid.world/share/#0/count…

@StefanFSchubert Lots of differences in the data sources there, but in any case I don’t think that’s inconsistent – inequality within the bottom can be high, even though the bottom may have closed the gap with the top a little bit of late.

A lot of the focus on US inequality concerns the top. But worth noting that the bottom of the distribution in the US is also very unequal compared to other rich countries. (The data is disposable income per capita from World Bank) ourworldindata.org/explorers/pove…

@lunarmobiscuit Couldn't agree more Luni! The fact that $2.15 a day implies such awful living conditions is why we need to draw attention to the hundreds of millions living on such low incomes – or lower still. Here you can explorer the data for a range of poverty lines: ourworldindata.org/explorers/pove…

$2.15 is still way too low. $2.15 is a life on the edge with bad weather = hunger, kids without shoes or medicine, darkness after sunset, a cook fire that shortens lives. The poverty line in the U.S. is $20/day, 10-fold higher.
Joe Hasell@JoeHasell

The key point: the change from $1.90 to $2.15 a day doesn’t imply shifting goalposts. It reflects a change in units – from 2011 to 2017 international-$. Accordingly, global extreme poverty estimates look similar on both bases. ourworldindata.org/explorers/pove…

To understand these changes, we need to understand what international-$ are and the two adjustments it makes: for inflation, and for differences in the cost of living between countries. I do my best to explain what’s going on there in the article! #understanding-the-world-bank-s-updated-poverty-estimates-what-does-the-shift-from-2011-to-2017-international-mean" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">ourworldindata.org/from-1-90-to-2…

The World Bank’s definition of extreme poverty was recently updated – from $1.90 to $2.15 a day. In a new article, I unpack what’s going on with this change and what it means for our understanding of global poverty. ourworldindata.org/from-1-90-to-2…
