Update, we got a new corporate license for the new entity. Our team is 30+ years of engineering and construction work in this field. Our knowledge is extremely valuable especially when we see so many contractors giving people terrible advice.

Update on business launch. Closed 3 jobs out of the 5 set as a goal with 8 more in the pipeline. Got contractors license, engineering workflow and have learned a shit ton. Lots of room to learn more. Having a lot of fun.

As the quality of our cities & towns have worsened, people are curious why we can't build better, more beautiful communities? Part of the answer is due to our zoning & building codes, construction & educational practices But there's another, perhaps more important reason

@Levijameshere @tferriss 2012 - Tim Ferris told me to drink Athletic Greens while eating high saturated fat diet of eggs and bacon every morning, chipotle for lunch and Safeway steak for dinner. Had the runs almost every day.

Launched a Foundation and Shoring business 3 weeks ago. Goal was to close 5 deals by the end of the year. I’ve had a total of 8-10 leads so far with 3 turning into quotes and no closes.

@jcolesimpson Reason I ask is I’m building a foundation and shoring business. Not quite at your scale or speed but trying to ramp up quickly. Thinking through the same issues.

Long week Ups and downs 3 closes, all from me and my managers Not generating enough leads Had 4 employees ask me for an advance this week Didn’t grow as much as I wanted on Twitter Wife got upset because I dropped the ball on some things Bank put a few large deposits on 10 day holds because it’s a newer account Hard thing about high expectations, the wins don’t hit as hard as the losses

After I got my MBA from Harvard, I bought an HVAC company with a personal guarantee. They were doing $55M in sales and $7M in profit. I hired a NY agency to rebuild the website. I mandated the whole company use Notion. I gave everyone a 25% raise. I taught the team about mental models. I encouraged all employees to listen to the All In podcast. I hired a Chief of Staff. I installed a cold plunge and a sauna in the break room. And guess what? We lost $12M last year.

No coffee shops were open at the mall this morning so went to the robot coffee stand. Placed an order for a latte and when checking out it asked for a Tip! Tipping robots is an insane concept.

This is Mike. He decided to become a plumber at 17 after finishing his GED. 10 years later, Mike is on the senior exec team in our company of 500 team members. Here's what we can all learn from Mike: 1. Mastering skills others can't (or won't) can open doors. 2. Volunteer to do the hard things that others try to avoid. 3. Have an insatiable desire to learn. Didn't go to college? You have a supercomputer in your hands. 4. When you take on a project, own it. End to end. Don't wait to be told what to do. 5. Get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations early in your career. That's part of leadership. You have a young "Mike" in your own business today. Find them and invest in them so they reach their full potential.

"We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas." (Steve Jobs) Below is the latest stolen idea that we've implemented. While Hoffmann Brothers has not yet achieved world domination in our industry-- I share Steve Jobs' view that we should take advantage of every opportunity to learn-- and steal-- the best ideas from great businesses. Earlier this year, several Hoffmann Brothers leaders and I were at the Tugboat Institute's annual "Gathering of Teams" event in Nashville. While there, I heard the CEO of a large multi-location business describe how he has begun to send a weekly note to his entire company. And he shared how this has helped to improve communication within his business by providing the entire company with a view into the topics, activities, ideas, and issues that are top of mind. I "stole" this idea and now draft a note for my entire team each Sunday as we prepare for the upcoming week. The result? It's hard to measure. But I've received far more engagement and responses to my weekly notes than I had anticipated. The start to last week's "Chris' Notes" email is below.

Ok team...Getting serious about the 2-day development summit in Minneapolis later this year. Please vote for the days that would work best for you. NOTE: Sun, Nov 5 is Daylight Savings Time so you'll get an hour back & Fri, Nov 10 is Veterans Day. This will be a 2-day event. First day project tours, second day more classroom oriented with speakers, talks, Q&A. Great meals, lots of interactions, and more surprises!! Reply to this post or DM me as I've started an interest list. Everything in motion... Final dates, info, agenda, etc to come in coming weeks! I'd love a repost if you'd be willing to help spread the word! 🙏🙏🙏

@moseskagan As someone who hit 40 without much to show for 2 decades of work, I can also assure you that if you find yourself in that situation (which is of course suboptimal): (i) you've acquired a skillset that likely has value, and (ii) it's not too late.

For those entering their 30s having taken a couple swings in start-ups w/o having made life-changing $$: Maybe take those tech skills & use them to build wealth in a more traditional biz. Really want to avoid hitting 40 w nothing to show for ~2 decades of work.

What could have been installed, using materials already in use nearby? ✔️ Jersey barriers ✔️ Precast concrete curbs (as on Lincoln Blvd & Funston Ave) ✔️ Water-filled barricades ✔️ The same railing used to protect Arguello’s drivers from going over the side of the road

In May, @presidiosf pledged a “protected” bike lane on Arguello. Instead, this month, they kept the *non-protected* lane and just added 25 plastic delineators. Will this inspire new bike usage? No. Would this have prevented the death that instigated the “improvement”? No.

Just read this gem: A good argument for why motorists should want to see more ebikes on the road: “Studies have shown that a mere 10% shift from car drivers to bike riders has resulted in a 40% reduction in traffic congestion. Even if you never touch an ebike, you would benefit.

BART’s use of unarmed Ambassadors and Crisis Intervention Specialists as full time staff has become a model in the industry. 7% of calls for service have been diverted from police to an employee with training in social work, allowing officers to focus on high priority calls.

In response to last week's tragedy at 4th & King, we have reduced the two right turn lanes from 4th Street onto King Street to a single lane. This slows traffic and reduces the conflict between turning cars and people in the crosswalk.
