@Patterdude @GrowSF Of course there should be rules around retention and how the data can be used. But come on, this is not some impossible policy problem. Writing those guardrails is your job. It’s not a reason to block speed cameras that save lives.

What don’t you understand? License plates are captured by a govt agency, most likely a private company on contract w a govt agency. That agency and govt has your personal data of where you’re driving, irrespective of if you’re speeding. How else is that data used and how long is it retained? These sorts of issues are dealt with all day long on legislative issues with the legislature leaning on protecting data. Surely you understand why this might concern people?

But policy makers have to make decisions based on the actual impact. Sure, speed enforcement cameras are fine if that’s all you’re asking. But do I need govt cameras tracking me - or their *vendors* - and maintaining the date for some period of time? There need to be guardrails on the use and longevity of the data before being allowed.
