Crazy that these photos are just a few days apart. 20 degrees to mid 70s in a matter of days.

JLR did such an amazing job with the new Defender by leaning into heritage. If they were to lean in on what made jaguars feel so special.. the over the top leather and wood, the excessively large and powerful engine, and in a nod to the e-type at the top of the thread, come out with a shooting brake (like the FF or the z3 pictured) - it could take market share from the Porsche Macan.

As the only CMO to rebrand 3 public companies, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. This is the Zoolander of rebrands—it reads like a parody. That it's not makes it beyond cringeworthy. The tagline is "copy nothing" but somehow it already feels tired and outdated... based on a cultural point-in-time that has passed. You want to be avant-garde? I’m here for it! Try this: Create the modern version of this car. Make it over-the-top retro-futuristic. Take a picture of it. There’s your ad. P.S. @jaguar, HMU.

@jasoncrawford and we also had a large bookshelf with a ton of classics- the big picture books on history and science worked the best to get them hooked

What's the best way to ambiently expose your kids to good books? Buy physical copies? Is there some digital equivalent of having a shelf full of books that people can randomly notice?
Emmett Shear@eshear

I learned so much from the books my parents had bought and read that were laying around the house. Artificial Life and The Case For Mars in particular come to mind, but there were dozens. Internet media lack this automatic ambient “library” exposure…I wonder what effect it has?

@eduleadership strange take and does not match my experience - I read the encyclopedia and then lord of the rings - and I did also read the auto manuals in the garage.

Just get your kids to read, ideally a lot of stuff they like, and let them have a good childhood. Don’t be the weirdo who insists his first grader ackshually loves Tolstoy and 1982 Toyota manuals.

A Boeing satellite just exploded. Dozens of satellite fragments are now flying around the geostationary arc. This company just can't stop taking massive Ls...

@KTmBoyle Interesting take but I am not buying it. In my neighborhood there are Subarus, Honda Pilots, and mini vans in between the Range Rovers and G-Wagens. Some people are just not car people. (everyone in my neighborhood is a boat person).

There was a generation of leadership that drove beat up cars and lived quietly because they remembered how bad the depression was. How quickly things could reverse. That generation is dead. The aesthetic of the wealthy in modern New York or San Francisco comes from a deeper self-loathing. The politics and aesthetic of shame. Success is bad. Dumb it down. Stay quiet. If you ever start feeling that it’s all very gray and shameful, move to Texas or Florida. Things will turn to technicolor once again.

If you leave California or any coastal elite city, drive for about 60 miles or so, and you’ll see that you’re leaving behind the politics of Shame. Miami or Vegas or Dallas is often described as “shameless” because everyone wants to build wealth and be successful. After a while you realize that shame is a political philosophy— it’s the polar opposite is capitalism. Opposite of the American ideal. The reason why a centi-millionaire in Palo Alto drives a Subaru isn’t because of thrift or altruism or true noblesse- it’s the politics of shame on full display.

@jefielding “traditional” - meaning web 2.0 SaaS, is not dead, but is on the decline. Right now it feels like the early 90s where the infrastructure layer that enabled Amazon, FB, Netflix, etc is being built. To me it feels like this is the BEST time.

Attended a conference last week where many of the VCs / LPs claimed that traditional venture is dead (or some variation of that). I left before the happy hour, way too depressing to stick around. Despite the current down turn, I’m optimist about the future of this business 🤷🏼‍♀️

@henningsanden I would say be direct. They will find out soon enough. The quicker they either double down or decide to give up benefits them.

The reason Im asking is that some people can mentally take it and react with energy. Finally somebody was honest and didnt BS them. But man... if you've been speaking with uni students you'll know that a lot simply cannot.

I often get asked to review portfolios where the artist has already finished uni or spent years learning 3D and their work is still nowhere near good enough to land a job. What's a good way to deal with this?

What is wrong with @github? Over a month ago my account was flagged for violating their Acceptable Use policy. They claimed my account engaged in hate speech. If you noticed my name -- Clark Fagot -- you may have guessed that they flagged the account based on my name. 🧵
