tbh frontier robotics is just a data business. except the data doesn't exist yet. so you build it: – robots + sensors are new senses. they turn dark corners of the world (infra, oceans, logistics, bodies) into data no one ever recorded – models finally work. all that raw footage just sat there unused. models can now understand & reason across it at scale (alloy) – every deployment emits more edge data. if you're clever, you find a way to get the customer to pay you and unlock negative collection cost. – the hard part is the reward system. did the robot actually do the thing? get the verifier right and compound like crazy – better models → faster, cheaper, harder deployments → more data. the loop tightens. – and unlike the internet, none of this data is public. it's yours. and hopefully a moat? over time the "robot logs" stop being telemetry and become the first written record of how the physical world actually works. and that trains the next models.

A reminder of how far we've come. This article from the Guardian highlighted how well Britain was doing in Tech in 2016 - we had 18 unicorns out Europe's total of 47. Ten years later, there are over 600 unicorns in Europe, and almost 200 in the UK. There's still a long way to go. But fortunately we know we can get there, because we've already come such a long way.

@ApoStructura Yeah. That’s what’s hard to see. Their bet is it’s negative until it’s not. And peace of mind is price-less. If the worst did happen, you’d wish you lived near people like this.

@MPrinParr It’s always a question of odds, anything can happen, but it looks to me that the expected value of spending this much money and effort prepping for the apocalypse is very negative. I get how it can be fun though

The truth is societies just don’t collapse anymore. There are exactly 0 developed countries that have collapsed in history. There have been crisis, but never a generalized sustained collapse like the one these guys prep for. I get the appeal, but the expected value is bad.
Marauder@themarauderproj

There's middle ground in this dichotomy, of course. There's various uses for all sorts of gear. And urban guys can have a rural mindset. But preparedness isn't a COD fantasy. The rural preparedness mindset is all about utility and being a legitimate asset to your friends & family

Agreed. But you’re assuming you can leave. I think for Americans, especially rural ones, leaving isn’t practical. Their wealth isn’t digital, and an airport isn’t just around the corner for them. I think it’s rationale to think that if something can happen once it can happen again. It’s more irrational to think that their nation, any nation, is immune to thy scale of collapse.

@MPrinParr Yeah, the one where this kind of prepping would actually make the difference.

@MPrinParr Society didn’t collapse, it didn’t collapse in the way preppers are preparing for. Same for South Africa, it’s a slow collapse, the best strategy is not to build a bunker it’s to make sure you can leave quickly

We inflicted a 9/11 worth of deaths on ourselves because of an eco-Calvinist ideology that forbids people from cooling down their houses with technology over a century old.
