One of the many narratives around the abandonment of SMiLE is that the other Beach Boys, mainly Mike Love, found it too strange, too out there compared to their earlier music. Which doesn’t really make sense when you listen to Smiley Smile, the album salvaged from its wreckage. Because it’s weirder and wackier than anything found on the SMiLE we got years later. Goofy, lo-fi, and made by a band clearly out their nuts, it’s their least commercial sounding album. Yet there’s an endearing charm to its silliness, and it has some truly lovely moments on it. And at the end of the day, Good Vibrations & Heroes And Villains are on it, so it’s got to be good.
