Police responding to a late-night fire alarm at an Iowa fraternity house discovered more than 50 blindfolded, half-clothed pledges packed into a filthy basement during an alleged hazing ritual.
In Iowa, hazing is a criminal misdemeanor — any reckless or dangerous act that risks a student’s health or safety for initiation into a group. And yet, incidents keep happening nationwide, with injuries and even deaths reported over the years.
So here’s the question:
If people keep getting hurt, should hazing carry much harsher penalties — not just for organizers, but for everyone who participates or allows it to happen?
