A tragedy for all American law enforcement and the loved ones of Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Luis Paez, Deputy Ralph Walter, Jr., and Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz who were killed in the line of duty after being struck by a vehicle at a car stop. Though these courageous cops knew the dangers of their work, they never hesitate to serve their community. This will forever be their heroic legacies. We must #NeverForget. #CopsCountPoliceMatter

I won’t share a forecast model or impact graphic yet. However, I would greatly appreciate it if this message were amplified for those in the path of yet another Florida hurricane. I spent over a decade covering them in the Sunshine State and gained insights from emergency managers on how a catastrophic scenario could unfold. This one has that potential. But get this. So did #Irma, #Michael, #Ian, #Idalia, and even #Helene. They actually were NOT worst case scenarios. They would have been far deadlier if their center tracks had been just a few miles further up or down the coast. Irma narrowly missed Fort Myers, while Michael narrowly missed PCB. Ian was devastating, but it slid south of Tampa. Idalia primarily affected rural areas, and Helene’s record surge was not accompanied by extreme winds in the big cities. All the previous storms mentioned had the potential to produce dire outcomes. And Milton does too. But like those, it could also fall short of a “worst case” scenario. My concern is that Floridians at the highest risk of it happening this time are so exhausted from the rash of recent near misses that they will disregard the legitimacy of Milton’s potential. This kind of situation is what keeps me up at night. We buckle up every time for the <0.1% chance of a fatal car accident. I pray that those who will soon be advised to evacuate ahead of Milton respect the tiniest possibility that a catastrophic outcome happens to them. And if it doesn’t, you still did the right thing.
