Forget my current occupation. As a DMV native who grew up devouring the Washington Post sports section, today’s unfathomable layoffs are another blow to local coverage that once defined this region.
When people I respect, competed against and care about — like @gene_wang (no, he’s not selling Crypto now after 37 years at WaPo), @tashanreed, @ScottSAllen, @MarkMaske, @Tom_Schad, @CandaceDBuckner and others — are learning their fate over email, it hits even harder.
An awful day for hard-working journalists, for local journalism, and for readers like me who fell in love with sports through that section.

@john_keim Agree! Before I unsubscribed from the post, I always had a difficult time following the DC sports teams on there. They always watered the beat reports’ work down with league stories (cool to have that too, but that’s not what I was there for).
