@JamesMontemagno @code @praeclarum You might have to do an explainer on why there is a VS Code agents app AND a Github Copilot app. I get that the second one is Github only, but it seems like a lot of duplication.

Awesome new @code feature. Assign utility models (titles/summaries/commit messages, etc) with your own local models or BYOK! #_configure-utility-models" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_121… @praeclarum

@_Evan_Boyle Whoever wins the IAE race will effectively replace the IDE for most developers and be the next generations VSCode.

If you've been wondering what I've been up to, the team and I have been cooking up something new. A new agent-native development environment deeply integrated with the GitHub graph. Not just for writing code, but all of the meta-work as well.

@shanselman Why don't MS release a Claude Recall connector. Seems like they were ahead of the game with an ai friendly screenshot memory but it got stuck in Windows Copilot.

@OrenMe @GitHubCopilot I would use auto if I could see it was using opus for reasoning and only handing off to lower model or even local for simple instructions like 'commit pls'. Like 'Auto max' or something. I'm sure that would save loads of trash use of Copilot resources.

Brace, brace, brace Major changes and finally clarity on usage limits, session and weekly, for @GitHubCopilot I think this reflects how much Copilot is popular and being used across but nevertheless this is a hard change for anyone who grown accustomed the the unlimited PRUs and sub agents usage freedom Hope we gonna see more news going forward for anyone wanting to further utilize their account and harness github.blog/news-insights/…

@OrenMe @code I’m guessing copilot chat will also be based on the cli as it does really make sense to have separate. Also agents shows cli sessions, not chat sessions.

New @code version 1.116 is out Behind the scenes, there’s some serious engineering work here racing against the clock to redefine the future agent-driven development experience A few highlights: The Agents app is now officially available in the Stable release It’s fully powered by the CLI as its agentic engine, which is a pretty major shift Also, the Copilot Chat extension is no longer separate, it now comes built-in with VSCode This should reduce a lot of friction in their release process, and also eliminate those annoying race conditions that used to pop up from time to time due to separate releases Migrations like this don’t happen casually, I’m pretty sure there’s more behind it that we’ll uncover soon On top of that, agent debug logs are now persisted, so you can revisit debug sessions even after restarting VSCode, thanks to JSONL files becoming the source of truth My guess is this ties into another feature coming soon, Chronicle, which will be embedded into VSCode (worth trying it via the CLI in the meantime, it’s been available there for a while) Another small UX story I touched on recently: the new carousel-style UI for tool approvals Instead of multiple approvals taking up tons of vertical space in chat, they’re now grouped into a carousel widget And there are plenty more improvements around terminal workflows and chat UI/UX We’ve been in a relatively long phase without obvious, visible leaps, but under the hood there’s serious groundwork being laid for the Agents app and the Agent Host protocol This should unlock new experiences like running multiple agents in parallel, having them communicate with each other, and coordinate tasks
Visual Studio Code@code

New @code release today 🚀 We're enhancing the agent experience with debug logs for past sessions, terminal interaction tools, built-in GitHub Copilot, and more!

@burkeholland @github Seems like this naturally offloads complex reasoning to higher model and leaves straightforward execution to cheaper model. So you could rubber duck Sonnet with Opus and still get more efficiency.

The @GitHub Research folks released a "Rubber Duck" agent for the Copilot CLI. Automatically get a review from a model from a different AI family. And their data shows that yes, this does in fact help. Quite a bit.

@burkeholland Does anyone else have this problem where, as soon as a meeting is about to start, Teams gets really slow?

As someone who uses both Slack and Teams for work every single day... Teams is better. It's more logical, less noisy, threads don't just disappear, you can find things, the AI integration is actually great. I'm sorry. Teams is just better.

Microsoft-owned GitHub has today revealed an update to its Copilot usage policy, and you probably know where it's heading. Starting next month, interactions with GitHub Copilot will be used to train the great AI model in the cloud. Oh, and said data can also be shared with "affiliates" which includes Microsoft. 👇

@davidfowl How long before it stops being reasonable to ask an interviewee to hand write code in an interview? I'm asking because thats the bit I don't like.

For those curious, new Surface PCs are coming this spring. So wait a few more weeks if you were thinking about buying a current gen model.

@James_M_South @Microsoft need to start again with a new, agent compatible, unix based os that runs the windows kernel as a subsystem, like wsl, just for backwards compatibility calls.

I just cannot believe that Windows is going to improve in any meaningful way. Where is this new design and development talent coming from to do this? Where are the managers coming from to deliver it?

@shanselman I'm curious to know if interviews will still have practical tests. I haven't hand written a line in over 3 months. Pretty soon no junior dev will have ever written code, or possibly even had to read it..

Had an amazing two days speaking to thousands of developers on how to navigate the uncertain future. One thing that really struck me though was the number of times people said things like I read your book in high school or I learned this language from your video, and now these folks are senior engineers at big companies I’ve only been doing this for like what, five years? Crazy 👴

I think @Microsoft @Copilot fundamentally misread how AI would evolve. Instead of integrating Copilot in all our windows apps, we want all our apps to be available to our chosen AI tool (@claude / @GitHubCopilot etc) through MCP.
