Today marks the official release of 'Strategic #SciComm.' We hope it'll be useful. Thanks to everyone who made it possible. And the work is just beginning. There's so much more interesting thinking, research, and real-world testing to do. amazon.com/Strategic-Scie… @MSUComArtSci

I spent my spring teaching inclusive & strategic science communication to scientists across the country. It was a BLAST. If your organization, university, or conference is looking for scicomm-focused speakers, lmk. I'm booking my fall schedule now!

@Gallup Could you remake table with some indicator of the actual tax rate when the survey was fielded. To what degree do these perceptions match reality?

56% of Americans feel their federal income taxes are too high, among the highest since President Bush’s first tax cuts were passed in 2001. Gallup's annual update on tax perceptions: on.gallup.com/4e2dPrN

As a particular case, I often use the conference presentations section to evaluate the extent to which someone is actually interdisciplinary. It can be hard to publish in multiple fields but an interdisciplinary scholar really needs to be presenting to more than one field.
Dr. Justin Zimmerman@JZPhilosophy

Unfortunately, a CV is not the appropriate document to be concise, especially when universities are quite clear that they want you to show “impact” and that you are solidly known and respected in the field. That requires counting where your work is seen and discussed. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Still eager to hear from colleagues headed to #AAASmtgs in Denver who have stories to tell about how their organization is trying to be strategic when it comes to #scicomm/#publicengagement. I'd like to interview you for a research project (compensated). DM or email me, please!

Really happy to be involved with this; @colognav and @nielsmede deserve a great deal of recognition for their leadership in making this massive project happen.

How do people perceive #science and its role in society? Do they #trust scientists? 🧑🏾‍🔬 We did a global 67-country survey (n=71,417) to test this, working with 239 researchers from all continents – the #TISP #ManyLabs study. It’s now available as #preprint: osf.io/preprints/osf/…

We lost a towering figure and a generous soul with Jack McLeod’s passing. What an amazing and impactful career - a model of scholarly life for so many, and a mentor and inspiration to countless more. He will be missed, though his legacy is assured in the field and at the UW. 💜

@jackcschultz Yep. I have no problem with the activity, it’s the framing I worry about as I see too many scientists who think that #scicomm is JUST about explaining research clearly.

@JohnBesley Perhaps you didn’t mean it this way, but “understanding my research” isn’t the point of translation. The critical thing is getting people to understand and believe the meaning of the research. And the ‘local impact’ approach described is one good way to do that on climate.

I continue to not love the 'translation' metaphor for #scicomm. I do not believe, in this regard, that people would agree with me and support me if they JUST understood my research. npr.org/2024/01/25/122…
